Either a pom or a yank must have told you this LOL
All of North America was british owned except the area of new france and new spain.
The original 13 british colonies which are now part of the USA were situated next to upper and lower canada which were also british owned (british had fought and won the territory of lower canada, now called Quebec, in 1775).
In 1776 when the Americans declared independence, the British loyalist fled to join their fellow countrymen in Canada.
In 1812, the americans had expansionist ideas and invaded Canada and burnt down half of Toronto. The Canadians aided by reinforcements from Britain and various native tribes successfully defended Canada and pushed the american troops back over the border. They also ended up burning down the white house.
So in short Canada was no gift to England from the US. Canada fought hard for it's soveriegnty against the US. They wanted Canada to be part of the US and we kicked their ass. We later went on to become a country in 1867. |

So before Canada was its own country it was owned by the Americans?
And some of Canada is now owned by the French, Italians, British and the US? Don't you own any of your country yourself?
Its really confusing. |

Canada was never part of the US.
The US tried to take it and it didnt because Canada beat them back.
Canada was at one time part British and part French. The British won the french part during the war.
So Canada used to be owned by the British, not the americans |
