i own a mixture of tiesto cds...from really old ones, to parade of the athletes...and they've never dissapointed me...
i have a bunch of his livesets too, and none of them were bad at all..i didnt really notice any majour ups or anything.
when you spin that hard tech-trance you cant have those slow, progressive transitions...i guess.
doesn't seem to dissapoint me.
tiesto: overrated? yes
tiesto: bad dj, no...
there are plenty of other djs that can mix better then he can, but they havent achieved that status yet.
think about it, mostly everyone in the public spotlight is overrated, and no matter how good you think you are, or how good others think you are, there will always be someone better.
its just the status you've achieved.
i've never been dissapointed with a tiesto CD ive bought, or a tiesto set i've downloaded, so to me, he's a good DJ.
its all opinion of course, many people think he sucks
listen to what you like. |

Pffff
Why can't you people understand there is more then beatmatching.
Ok true that beatmatching and mixing is an important part of djing. Tiesto sometimes trainwrecks and sometime he has a flawless mix. He is no sasha, but note that he is playing a completely different styl.
Why I think tiesto is a great dj is that he takes the crowd on a trip. A trip you can't be part of if you are listing an mp3 set. His set build ups are really great. He knows how to read the crowd: He knows when to speed up, when to slow down and he exactly knows when to drop that dancefloor killer track.
Reading the crowd and his set building are his strong points. For me that totally compensates the mixing errors. I don't really care if a dj's makes me dance with 2 turntables or 6 turntables + midi mixer + live albleton input + pioneer effects unit as long I have a great night I dont really mind. |

I agree with the topicstarter!
I have seen Tiesto a lot during 1998/2000 when it was common he would appear in Dutch clubs for a NORMAL fee and it was so sweet (Gouryella Nights, Tiesto Solo Tours, stuff like that), but now...I have to fight a battle for a ticket for TIC, and he's is NEVER, and I mean absolutely NEVER in Holland EVER! He's only spinning in the US..... |

like what's been said, a lot of his transitions are really rushed.
and no one, i mean, NO ONE, can screw up a mix CD. no one would release it if it wasnt perfect, and thats why its done with software to make sure everything is EQed and everything is EXACTLY as they could hope for. |
There's bad beatmatching on Nyana, anyway. |

You guys are missing the point about a mixed CD. A CD is supposed to be perfect and flawless. It's supposed to be that way because it's being sold to the public. Computers can only do so much. They can't pick the transition points, they can't figure out which songs fits best mixed into the next, they can't figure out how to flow a mix and they can't figure out how to creat a mood. All they can do is help help with aligning beats, EQing, and mastering. The mind of the DJ is responsible for setting up the songs, the transitions points, the structure of the set, the flow, and keeping the right mood. Computers are just an aide to make the CD a QUALITY sounding CD and that's ALL.
When I listen to a Tiesto CD I don't think WOW his mixing is superb, I think wow he really knows how to record a set well.
Like said above George Acosta s up some of his CD mixes and that's so dumb. And lets not forget that the famous James Holden used Pro-Tools to mix his very acclaimed Balance 005 album, but no one scolds him for that??? Don't be hypocrites. Realize the truth about mix comps...
Yes live Tiesto can't match his CD quality, HOWEVER there were times in the past previous to 2003 that he could, so he may have dropped off a little, maybes he's losing his passion or he's just getting lazy but that doesn't mean he can't do it again, but I doubt he'll come back because he's been doing this so long and being acclaimed for so much that I guess he doesn't realize that he isn't performing live like he used to so he see's no reason to change.
Oh well.
oh and...

His CD's are not mixed on computers. For those of you who criticize him for slipping beats while mixing live, I guess you are deaf when it comes to his mix CDs. I've heard a few mismatches(although not glaringly obvious) in Nyana and Parade. I don't know if they were done intentionally to signify the fact that he is doing it live, or if he really is trying to do a perfect take and ends up making a mistake, which we all know is against all rules of humanity and will cause the moon to explode and the world will end. Get over it: I've never heard a live set or live mix CD that are 100% perfect. Different people adhere to different mixing methods and track selection. In fact, a substantial amount of the thrill you experience while seeing a DJ live is the fact that you KNOW he/she can mess up, but keeps the energy and life of the set going by NOT ing up.
If your expecting a machine-like mixing exhibition from a guy who does this night in and out, then you might as well stick a juke box on stage instead of a live, breathing, HUMAN, cuz it's simply not going to happen.
Correction: it's never going to happen. |

I have no problem w/ Tiesto's mixing, but his track selection isn't the way it use to be and the style i liked

Um ever heard the expression practice makes perfect? Technical DJ talent should concievably get better over time because of the fact they do it so often.
Paul Oakenfold and Tiesto need to ask themselves if their hearts are in it because it sure doesn't show up at their shows.
I DID say I enjoy Tiesto live everytime I have seen him but I can tell from my experiences seeing him and from listening to old sets back in his "prime" that the ablitity is declining. He still has good moments but he's not as consistent as before. |

Everybody jumps the bandwagon saying that Tiesto sucks. His releases are always great, and always have great tunes on them.
Tiesto in Concert 2 ing owned anyways, and that's just from my home speakers. Can't imagine how fun much it was actually being there. |
