Seriously man. Take a moment and think about it.
If one can't consider the possibility of a negative outcome (or lack of a positive outcome, which is NEGATIVE) as a result of her comments - then they need to give their head a shake. |

Ok folks... I admit it.
There is this thing called planet earth. The pivot point around which planet earth turns is this place called Toronto (GTA to be more exact).
Now everything else that goes on in the world doesn’t matter - unless it starts or finishes at this pivot point.
Further - this pivot point doesn't need to be concerned with what it (or it’s people) does - because the world keeps rotating around, regardless.
After all - who gives a about beef farmers not being allowed to export beef into the USA - I've never seen a cow in Toronto.
After all - who gives a about lumber producers being levied taxes when trying to export product into the USA - I've never seen a lumberjack in Toronto.
After all - who gives a about inflexible, protectionist economic policies with our biggest trading partner - sure they could be changed, other parts of Canada could have more jobs, a better economy - but I've never been out of work, laid off, bankrupt.

The fact of the matter is that anybody who actually takes a stand in politics will have enemies. That goes for American politicians like Bush and Reagan and Canadian politicians like Stephen Harper and Mike Harris. When you're a spineless, pandering candidate like Ernie Eves or John Kerry, you may have less enemies, but you simply won't get elected.
However, despite the many people who disagree with Bush's principles (and they have every right to), he speaks on them with class and tact. I don't really give a if he's been caught off-guard a few times and given a few stupid answers, that's not the point (Chretien had MANY more slip-ups than Bush ever did, it's just that Canadians never seem to care how embarrassing their own politicians are, only U.S. politicians).
Parrish does not speak with class or tact. There are more professional ways to go about criticizing the USA than stomping on a Bush doll. She has no principles to speak out on either - her actions are motivated by good old-fashioned anti-Americanism. Perhaps her actions are easily digested by liberal Canadians, but that's hardly surprising since those same liberal Canadians carry themselves with equally little class. There is a HUGE difference between her actions being good for her candidacy and being good for this country.
It still never ceases to amaze me at how Canadians will look at incidents like this and refer to it as "nonconformity" or "standing up for herself", when it's entirely clear that Bush-bashing and anti-Americanism are actually the social norms in Canada. She's not standing up against anyone - she's just being a lot more tactless in stating what the rest of these politicians already think anyway, the latter part of which is exactly why Martin won't can her ass.
As long as someone bashes America, they'll receive praise from Canadians no matter how idiotic their actions really are. What an utterly ing sad reflection on the state of affairs in this country - a nation of insecurity. Someone give me a ring just before we arrive at the 3rd world, so I can hop across the border and not have to deal with communism. |

Yea I knew what you meant. My point is that a person does not run for political office for the money. They do it for various other reasons: prestige, power, ambition, etc.
At any rate, a salary comparable to that of contemporary company presidents and vice presidents would be needed to draw the kind of talent you speak of in any meaningful quantity. That would be ludicrous, spending $1million+ on EACH MP....
