I hear what you are saying to some extent, but it seems like you are using a different reference point than is relevant for this conversation. And the tracks you listed may be more classic than a track like Stardust, but those genres are older in their root as well. |

So, let me get this straight... what all you Tiesto-kids are saying is, that those tracks are classics because they are influences to today's trance?
:stongue:
you. They didn't do anything new and innovative. They were formulaic even back then. |

Well as someone who started listening to trance in 1998 I'm afraid I can't comment on tracks from before. |
why cant you comment on tracks from before? I didnt start listening to any kind of electronic stuff until 96, but the first thing i did when i became really interested in that sound was to check out things that had already been. Why cant you do the same? |

More popular classics:

what about these:
man with no name: vavoom
hybrid: finished symphony
tiesto: flight 643
transa: enervate
lost tribe: gamemaster
also "newer" classics could be stuff like
motorcycle: as the rush comes
and besides, if trance music as a disctinct genre is only 10 to 12 years old at best, then whats wrong with reffering to a quality, well known, dancefloor killing song as "classic" if it was made while the genre was only 6 or 7 years old out of a a possible 12....merely a little over halfway its lifetime..
anyone follow that? like how 80 year olds refer to stuff as classic when it was around when they were 40??? know what i mean? |

Well obviously I've heard songs from before 98 or whatever, but to be honest I didn't consider them Trance, more dance music.
Apart from Moonman that is. I await your scathing reply |

This thread is hilarious...
No 5 years ago is not long ago even in Trance... It did begin in 1991 afterall. And unlike many who have posted ( with an exception ofcourse )... Ive been listening to Trance since then...
A classic is not defined by whether a track is known by all... or whether a track is a smash hit... Trance was only popular to those who knew about... and not many did as it was not a commercialised sound like it is today... In fact Trance back then is nothing like the crap that is out now or even 5 years ago for that matter. And many 'purests' argue that you cannot even call the music played today as Trance.
A classic in Trance, depicts a raw, pure Trance sound... A tune that is ahead of its time.
* LSG - Hearts
* Cosmic Baby - Heavens Tears
* Mystic Force - Clearlight
* Union Jack - Two Full Moons & a Trout |

See that track... I think it's nice. Sounds pretty fresh even for today, has a cool sounding bassline & a good atmosphere to it.. but I see it as little more than a set filler. Even though the socalled epic trance may be less thought out and innovative, I (and a fair few others here evidently) prefer it because of the emotional power/energy it has. There is something about changing chords & soaring riffs that no matter how uncreative, appeals to so many people... really can't explain why. Horses for courses and all that...
I still think people are limiting themselves to genre names too much though... the old trance sound is more abundant in some modern progressive/psy... really don't think you can compare it to the epic trance of today, the two satify completely different needs.
Not wanting to argue... just attemtping to clear stuff up.
/edit - since i didn't make it clear.. i probably only like less than a tenth of uplifting/epic trance out today... but the ones i like the most have much more effect on me than most other genres do. |
