On the other hand things like Crush are well executed for what they are, but what they are isnt really a lot. Hollow, shallow wank really.

If you evaluated For An Angel in a pure vacuum against the rest of his work, yes, it's not his best. But pieces of music develop in a cultural context of meaning and memory, in addition to their purely technical value. They represent ideas, like any other piece of art. It's okay to separate out this cultural element and judge accordingly, but one has to recognize that such evaluation is not the total impact of a work.

Taken as a whole with the Love Parade, For An Angel embodies quite a lot.

Let me put it this way: I got in trouble with Natascha over this. She says the song was written for her. Might be true if they met around 94. But when the song was redone in 98 it honoured Loveparade and freedom for the people of Berlin. The angel on top of the Siegessaule in the middle of the parade symbolizes that.

So I guess it's just the way you look at it.

Both are true. They had obviously met in 1994 as she was the studio vocalist on his 45RPM album.

If there are no lyrics, there usually isn't much emotional meaning behind a track name.

On what grounds do you make such a judgement ?

Well PvD says the song is written for her. I'd trust Paul himself. :)
It's one of PvD's classics- fell in love with it when I first listened to it. So any way you look at it, it's a great production :D

Well it makes sense. Why attach emotional meaning or symbolism to a track if there's no way of conveying it. For An Angel isn't much different to countless piano-based trance tracks that have no emotional meaning whatsoever in terms of music.

and why is a vocal the only way of conveying what you speak of?

You can give general impressions through pure instrumentalism- i.e aggression, sadness, happiness etc. but tell me how a few piano notes can convey that PVD made the song for his wife?
