The problem is that DC is a peer-to-peer filesharing program. Chances are that most of the people you download off of on DC hubs are using residential broadband connections (or worse, phone modem) just as you are. Therefore, you'll still get somewhat slow download speeds w/P2P - even with a higher bandwidth connection. Of course there are many other factors like traffic congestion through the hops - but that's my take on P2P download speeds in general.

It all depends on network conditions, not your modem.

Not completely true....Rogers has been involved in bandwidth throttling for a long time....I started using their service 4 yrs ago and till date have never gotten a consistent connection speed....I have moved twice in this 4 yr period from a very crowded neighbourhood to a less crowded one , but the internet speed has stayed the same....

I agree that it does depend on the network condition, the neighbourhood, the nodes in that neighbourhood and so on....but they cap the speed using their modems....a good example is the rls of their new extreme service which gaurantess a higher connection speed....the only thing that changes in this whole equation when u get this service is the modem for which u pay close to 100$ :whip:

True.....but i have tried downloading from ppl who are not on a phone modem....instead they are on a dedicated T1 with no slots occupied and i've still gotten low connection speeds....

The funny thing is that the DOCSIS 2.0 specification which all new cable modems comply with supports speeds up to about 50 Mbps. So with a little engineering know-how and an A+ certification (the latter so as not to void your warranty), you could technically pop open the modem yourself and uncap it.

You pay full rental or payment price for a modem that's been crippled - ripoff.

-- Incidentally, just because the person you're downloading from on DC says he has a T1 doesn't mean that he does.

The new modem from Rogers is free...

Not $100. They're upgrading everyone to the "Extreme" service, it's just that it was available a few months prior to this whole thing.

So I'm told.

According to their website, it's still $100 for the Extreme-capable modem.

I believe that the earlier Rogers modems were not DOCSIS-compatible. The reason they sell you the new modem instead of renting it is so they don't have to carry the cost of the equipment on their books...

They may very well be renting the new DOCSIS modems for new sign-ups to their lower speed services, but I'm sure they've been capped at the appropriate service speed.

I recall reading somewhere within the past month that they are also considering offering an 8Mb service that would cost around $100 / month.

I went into Rogers Video with my old modem, and they gave me the new one, no questions asked, nothing else. Straight swap.

That was just to upgrade the old LanCity modems, because they were synchronous modems (new ones are asynchronous) and Rogers doesn't want to support them anymore.

They're still capped. Don't mistake the modem "upgrade" for what they call the "extreme" service.

In order to get the extreme service you have to pay them to remove the cap. That's done on their server (although as I said earlier, you could also do it by cracking open your modem and disabling it).

Are you actually on the Extreme service though? (It should say on the receipt they gave you). Eventually they're going to phase in the DOCSIS modems for everyone since it's easier for them to control / diagnose them. Just because you have the same modem as those with Extreme service doesn't mean you'll necessarily be getting Extreme speed as the speed caps can be adjusted remotely.

Rogers is a big rip off.....I don't care about their shabby business practices but wat i don't like is their crappy service.....my internet connection has gotten worse over time and now its at a point where I can't rely on it anymore....I will be chatting with somebody or downloading something important and the connection will go down for 30 mins... :wtf:
I guess i could play with my modem to speed up the connection but it wont be clean and will void my warranty.....T1 connection thingy on DC is for real....i know the guy personally and he has a T1 at his home office

No, not fractional.

10 Mbps down.
1 Mbps up.
1 Static IP (+ 1 dynamic).
No tx/rx cap.
