this is occrider's, but its interesting. i know of 1D, 2D, 3D, but i just cant grasp 4-D. is it time, existance? what is it? and how does this cube illustrate it?:conf: |

time: its the idea that the only reason you and something else arent co-existing in the same spot is because time has seperated you.
also 4d cubes cast 3d shadows! eeek |

the 4th dimension has nothing on the 5th dimension. tetraspace goes passed what our comprehension is; which is length, width & height. The 4th dimesion goes into time & space. We patheic humans will never fully understand the 4th dimension.

Yeah time is the 4th dimension. Think about it in terms of movement...
You can move to both side, forward and back and climb up & down, which covers the first 3 dimensions. You are automatically moving forward through time throught your life, thus also moving in the 4th dimension.
Our inability to manipulate time and move backwards through it, pretty much makes our lives 3½ dimensional. |

It's not a cube, it's a tesseract. Just as a cube is a net of 2D squares "folded" into 3D space, a tesseract is a net of 3D cubes folded into 4D hyperspace.
4D objects are very difficult to visualise as we are all 3D beings. There are some good analogies I've heard about comparing our struggle to grasp the concept of 4D objects, with 2D beings trying to understand 3D. |

In a nutshell:
Light travels at a fixed speed. If, at this very second, a star 1 million light years away were to explode, we would not see this explosion for another 1 million years. If it exploded exactly 1 million years ago, we would just now be seeing it happen.
The supernova occurred at point x,y,z in space, at time T. Thus, time is the 4th dimension.
There's a lot more to it, but that's just the general idea |
