Students shouldn't be smoking in the washroom, or at all for that matter if they're below the legal age limit of buying them in the 1st place. |

Exactly - you're asking what the difference is between now and the middle ages, well now we have this thing called hygiene, and perfume is essentially unnecessary, therefore it is not as accepted as it used to be. It's got nothing to with the amount (see below).
quote: | - Cost of perfume - what does that have to do with the price of eggs in baghdad?
- Overall level of affluence - see above |
The cheaper it is and the more wealth people have, the more people will put on larger amounts of perfume. Historically it was limited either to royalty or the extremely wealthy; now it's available to any schmoe.
quote: | - The array of scents available (more scents = more scents acrid enough to choke a horse) ---- i know that people doused themselves in quite a few chanel brands back in the day as well |
My point still stands.
quote: | - Amount of women in the workplace (huge one!)- um cologne and deodourant? |
Right. How many men do you know that wear cologne to work? Surely not nearly as many as there are women who wear perfume. Besides which, I'm quite certain that this ban isn't going to be discriminatory (cologne will be banned as well as perfume).
And deodorant? Give me a break, as if that's anywhere NEAR as potent as perfume!
quote: | - Asthma conditions (people weren't aware of it many years ago, and it seems to be on the rise, probably due to things like air pollution) --- asthma caused by air pollution NOT perfume. So why not take measure to ban polluters instead? Oh yes, that would be the logical and difficult way to do things. |
We're not trying to stop the asthma, just to stop the things that cause it to flare up. Even if we put a ban on every single air-polluting product (which would be physically impossible), it would still take decades for the air to clear up.
Try again. |

Ok fast forward to 1950. Why werent people whining about this then?
Air pollution counts have actually LOWERED since the 50s btw |

Again Jay, the environment has changed- there are LOTS of factors. I'm sure scientists could show you a list of reasons/ possibilities as long as a book, but we're not scientists. |

because people like to bitch all day long.....but seriously sometimes old ladies make me wanna puke with that 60's they wear. |

Sorry... im more prone to believe that its the attitude that has changed. People always disliked "the old lady who smells like a whore" but they put up with it. However now in this legal "me" generation people feel that they no longer should have to and will go to great lengths to stop it. It's very sad. I think they are using asthma as a crutch. |

What about people who dislike "the old lady who smells like an old lady"? ;)
I think Tea Rose perfume should be banned completely. That stuff is ill! I had a bad reaction to it when I was young, and it turns my stomach if i ever catch whiff of it, which is rare, thank goodness, cuz it is an 'old lady scent'. I hate the smell of roses in general as a result. Lily's for me only, please.
My friend has a severe allergy to carnations, and she won't even shop in a grocery store that sells them in the florist dept. |

It's NOT being banned because it's an "inconvenience". If that were the case, I agree it would be ridiculous. But it's being banned because it's a LIABILITY. Maybe you say it shouldn't be a liability, and maybe you're right, but in that case you're complaining about the wrong issue!
... |
well someone in here has a clue, lol...debating the merits of a fragrance free environment is sooooo not the point...this has nothing to do with appeasing complainers...it's about the decision makers at the school district feeling that they could lose a potential lawsuit so they're taking measures to protect themselves.
take this up with the lawmakers and the judges in the ed up U.S. legal system that rewards people well beyond what they "deserve" in these types of cases...the system that could have awarded this kid millions if the case actually went to court and the kid won. |

The next thing you know, they'll start banning peanut products (such as peanut butter) in certain classes, or worse yet, entire schools - to protect children with alergies to certain nuts. This will be due to kids throwing peanut butter sandwiches at eachother during food fights, where some unfortunate allergic kid gets hit by accident by a white-slice square in the face. Pure weapons. |
hahahahha! :stongue:
i was about to make the same type of comparison! |

This is the solution ive been looking for. The rare person with the problem should be the one who avoids carnations. They shouldnt be banning carnations. |

My niece got a letter saying she couldn't take peanut butter sandwiches to school because one kid was allergic. My sister said, "screw you, move the allergic kid to another class," because my niece would starve, since the ONLY thing she takes for lunch is a peanut butter sandwich. You can't win these days. My uncle is allergic to new carpeting. |
