cause those were pretty 'different' as well.

i'd say it's more similar to American Psycho, yet the main character in Glamorama is Victor from Rules of Attraction. the book starts off kind of slow, but sort of minds you halfway through and then it gets real interesting. i've read it twice and it's always slow for me to get started but then after a while i seriously can't put it down.

oh, and there were passages in Glamorama that gave me horrible nightmares.

still... it's gotta be one of my favorite books ever.

I never post, but I was searching for good books to read and no one has mentioned this utterly awesome book:

The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test by Tom Wolfe...

Awesome, just awesome :)

There is also the Celestine Prophecy by James Redfield and Principia by Sir Isaac Newton
Both very interesting Although Principia is a little DEEP

and it was out of stock! What a disappointment. So I ask the smart readers in COR, which is basically everybody, to recommend a good book, popular or not, that will hopefully be in stock when I go to the store. Please indicate what type of book it is. Fiction is better but anything else is also welcomed.

Fedor M. Dostoievski - Crime and punishment , best book ever, stunning, astounding, fantastic! It's fiction, very very well known, a classic, it's about consciousness troubles after a crime, I don't tell you more :) but really believe me it's incredible!

Bah...most of contemporrary literature is garbage

For true masterpieces browse the classics; there you will find the english langage displayed at its finest (w/out the cancerous distortions of the language we see today). I just finished reading several books by Somerset Maugham

In particular I recommend his collection of short stories. Several stories are about his time working for British Intelligence. There are some rather interesting stories that take place in the far east/Pacific Islands...I'm a sucker for late 19th century tales of adventure set in the tropics

Depends on what you mean by classic, I mean when did the classical period stop and the modern begin. Also literature is part of the mechanism via which language evolves and changes... the english language is not a static animal, otherwise we'd stille bee talkinge like Chaucer.
Many novels written as late as the 60's (eg Catch 22, A Clockwork Orange) are now readily accepted as classics by the literary establishment. Relegating modern literature to the scrap heap is likely to leave one with a somewhat narrow-minded outlook. While old books, with the allure of archaic english can be seductive and certainly serve a purpose, they are also shrouded in the conservativism and bias of their times. They also arose out of particular academic and philosophical environments... and the great majority of these classics can't possibly serve as a true reflection of a postmodern society which has experienced as much as the world has over the last half a century.

If you want to pick bones classical literature is strictly Latin and Greek literature. When people refer to books that are classics they don't mean from the classical period they mean that its a piece of great literature.

I'm looking for something new to read. Since I have the time I was considering reading about different authors to the ones I mostly read. Those authors are for the most part from Spain: Unamuno, Baroja, Machado, Galdos, Valle-Inclán, Azorín, etc.

So to be clear, I'm looking for any thing, excluding porn related material of course and books about cooking.

I apologize if I'm vague. But thanks to everyone for the suggestions.

Do you read in spanish??

My recommendations:
-Mario Vargas Llosa
-Alfredo Bryce Echenique
Great peruvian writers, although Mario Vargas Llosa is a little overrated IMO.

So here's the list of what I'll be reading this year:

  • Choke by Chuck Palahniuk
  • Breakfast of Champions by Kurt Vonnegut
  • A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin
  • Disclosure by Michael Crichton
  • A Wild Sheep Chase By Haruki Murakami
  • Glamorama by Bret Easton Ellis
  • Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card
  • The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test by Tom Wolfe
  • Celestine Prophecy by James Redfield
  • The Ecstacy Club by Douglas Rushkoff
  • Conversación en la catedral by Mario Vargas Llosa
  • Un mundo para Julius by Alfredo Bryce Echenique

I read the first pages of The Firm. The first remark about the firm not having an African-American threw me off. I might read it but it is not certain.

Yeah. I wouldn't call it the best book ever though but it certainly is a good one. I've read it. I like his style of narrating. The realism of society is reflected in this story. Great read. I agree, it's incredible.

I read the first season. It was a good read. But I should also mention that at times I felt the lack of detail. Maybe that was just me. Also, that falls under the category of constructive criticism. Also, you killed the person who for a moment I thought was the main character. Not cool but original I guess.

Anyway, I'll try reading the rest of the seasons soon, I want to see what Amanda Klein has in store for me. Thanks for the recommendation. You're a good writer and your imagination also helps.

Thank you all for the recommendations. I will try to read each one by the end of the year(I have other obligations that will keep me from reading them all sooner). I have already started reading some books you guys recommended. Again, thank you.
