What the is up with America and sex?! I've heard stories in Africa about what damage the Catholic church is doing regards to helping the spread of aids but it now seems America is going down the same track regards religion and sex!
| quote: | The climax came with the message now being taught in schools across the US: abstaining from sex until marriage is the only form of protection. The federal government will put around $170 million into abstinence-only sex education programmes in schools in 2005, a $30m increase over last year.
Bush was pushing for the total to go up to $270m - similar to the money spent on the nation's family planning services, which are experiencing cuts as conservative forces crack down on contraception and abortion. |
| quote: | | A recent report led by Californian Democratic Congressman Henry Waxman revealed some federally funded programmes taught pupils that Aids could be spread through sweat and tears, abortion led to sterility and suicide, pregnancy could result from touching someone's genitals and oral sex could give you cancer. |

| Teaching that the only 100% safe sex = no sex at all is not a new thing...and it's true too. |

Yes but the danger of proclaiming that condoms dont work could lead to some people just not using them in the first place...
Do you think that it is sensible or responcible for the American government to be funding programmes like these? Or do you think people should have the right to all information regarding sexual health issues??? |

| I think you just have to look at the recent election results in the USA to understand why funding is being increased and given the narrow margin of the victory these right wing voters are now very important to the republicans,so overall i would say expect more,i believe abortion is next on the agenda for possible abolition. |

yep its an old idea..still practiced by some priests i believe(some)

| What are you talking about? First off, Condoms aren't 100% like abstinance because condoms are only about 99.8% safe, good odds but not good enough. Furthermore, since when does everyone use condoms? LOL. It's very naive to think that just because they are around they mean safe sex for everyone. There are hundreds of reasons why people don't buy them or wear them and that won't change. Since that failed next step should be to limit sex period. Amen for that. They should just start showing the movie "Kids" in 7th grade and no one will have sex for years. |

Nobody said condoms were 100% safe. But claiming they do not work full stop is ing stupid. I can't believe we've even got one of em here justifying this. Its like drugs. Obviously the safest way to take them is, well not to take them. But at the end of the day people will take drugs no matter what, but not giving people to the information on how to take them safely creates more problems. Thinking that not teaching kids how to practice safe sex will not encourage them to have sex is not only ing dumb (like the drugs example too) its dangerous... |

| Schools have been teaching this bull about safe sex for years and it doesn't help one bit. People know and choose not to acknowledge the information. So, apperantly we go to plan B. You can't trust 250 million people to do the right thing. |

yes, we should discourage the use of condoms because there's a .2% failure rate.
this is a total waste of taxpayer money. i suppose it's part of some grand scheme to ensure the production of idiots in our society, as now only kids with common sense will think to use protection during sex.
i remember when the teen pregnancy rate was skyrocketing in this country, and education on safe sexual practices was inacted and worked. now that's being tauted a failure not because of positive results, but because it's "morally" wrong. does anyone here really think that advocating abstinance will cause children to abstain from sex? i'll file that reasoning with the just say no campaign of the 80s. |
