Diet study reaffirms red meat as a culprit in colon cancer
50 minutes ago Top Stories - USATODAY.com
By Liz Szabo, USA TODAY
Three studies published in Wednesday's Journal of the American Medical Association (news - web sites) shed new light on the role of diet and cancer.
In one article, scientists who studied the eating patterns of nearly 149,000 American adults over two decades found that those who ate the most red and processed meat over a 10-year period had a 30% higher risk of colon cancer and 40% greater risk of rectal cancer compared with those who consumed the least, says Marjorie McCullough, senior epidemiologist at the American Cancer Society (news - web sites) and an author of the study.
In contrast, those whose diets included lots of poultry and fish were 30% less likely to get colon cancer compared with people who ate little of those foods. The researchers speculate that it's possible poultry and fish contain factors that may protect against colon cancer.
The article reinforces the results of earlier studies that linked meat and colon cancer, Walter Willett, chairman of the nutrition department at the Harvard School of Public Health, wrote in an accompanying editorial.
Scientists need to do additional studies, he says, to get more detailed information about the relationship between meat and cancer.
Researchers say their findings are especially important today when many people are following popular low-carb diets and eating more red meat. Beef consumption, which began to fall in 1976, has been increasing slowly since 1993, according to the study.
Colette Heimowitz, vice president of education and research at Atkins Nutritionals, says low-carb diets don't have to include a lot of red meat. Many low-carb dieters opt for poultry, fish, nuts and tofu instead of beef. To reduce the risk of cancer, she recommends that dieters choose hormone-free meat that has not been charred.
In a second study published today, European researchers who followed nearly 286,000 women for an average of five years found that fruits and vegetables did not protect against breast cancer.
Still, people should continue eating fruits and vegetables, because research shows they do lower blood pressure and the risk of heart disease, said authors Petra Peeters and Carla van Gils of the University Medical Center in Utrecht in the Netherlands.
Diets rich in fruits and vegetables also might protect people from cancers of the stomach, esophagus, head and neck, and possibly the lungs and colon.
Peeters and van Gils note that they studied only women ages 25 to 70. It's possible that eating fruits and vegetables in childhood might offer protection later, though researchers didn't investigate that question.
The study's findings are consistent with other studies that have shown no link between breast cancer and other dietary factors such as fat, fiber or meat, says Heather Feigelson, a senior epidemiologist at the cancer society.
Other lifestyle changes do appear to reduce breast cancer risk. Feigelson suggests that women maintain a healthy weight, stay physically active, limit their alcohol consumption and avoid or limit the use of hormone therapy.
A third article in JAMA, in which researchers followed nearly 1.3 million Korean adults for 10 years, reports that people with high blood-sugar levels and diabetes were slightly more likely to develop certain cancers, especially of the pancreas.

That's sucks i'm sorry to hear :(...of course diet is not the only thing that contributes to such things but either way - extreme diets are never good ;)
Just like you said enjoy life :p and excercise and make the best of it...I don't see that many FAT europeans and they know good food and know how to enjoy it ;) |

Yup and some of those crazy diets don't make any sense...for example the other day i was walking through chapters and saw one of those diet books, so i flip it over to read some stuf on the back and this is what I see...BIG RED LABLE - CAUTION, THE FOLLOWING FOODS CAN BE DANGEROUS TO YOUR HEALTH - bananas, oranges, bread, pasta...and so on with other fruits and vegetables...like seriously, that's just stupid...and this morning they had this excercise/diet guru on breakfast TV, and they asked him about the diets and etc...and again basically the only thing you should eat is steak or chicken breast...like seriously...who needs this kinda torture (not that i don't like meat)...but i'm gonna enjoy my foods and excercise and watch my portions ;) |

I gave up red meat two years ago...chicken, turkey, and seafood is all I eat in terms of meat.
low carb low fat diets are stupid, without really looking at what you're eating.
Veggies should be the bulk of your carb intake. Most have a low impact on blood sugar/insulin levels, and have fibre and nutrients. Ditch, for the most part, processed foods like breads, white rice and breads, non-whole grain cereals, refined sugards, etc., along with sufficient water and "good" fat intake (nuts, seeds, and oils such as flax, olive and canola, and you'll be fine ;) |

There's no way I'm ditchin rice and bread :p it's also BS, there's nothing BAD about them...I don't think you need to ditch anything at all really, just make sure you eat everything in moderation and maintain proper portion sizes :D
Oh...and excercise of course ;) |

white rice and bread have a more negative effect on blood sugar and insulin levels than brown rice or whole grains...and are nutritionally not even on the same level as vegetables.
you're kind of right...they're not that BAD for you...but they're also not very good. The only time you need simple complex refined carbs like that is right after a workout when you're looking to replace lost glycogen stores (AFAIK). As part of a regular meal...not really beneficial at all.
who here eats enough vegetables and fruit every day that they can "afford" to be eating very much rice and bread instead? ;) |

Yeah but now you're talking more about the health benefits which is fine but I was talking before about dieting and weight loss kinda stuff...I mean look at asian people, most of them eat tons of rice and most are rather REALLY skinny...genetics play a huge role as well it depends on the person too :)
Either way though from a health benefit point of view then whole grain stuff is definititely much better...But I think i'd rather keep the idea of food as something great and beautiful and something enjoyable rather than simply scientific approach of it being simply the fuel to our body. :happy2: I love all the bad stuff to be honest with you but I really try to keep it low :) |

Interesting....
I do not discount the affect that diet has on your health...But I did adopt my own 'Low Carb' lifestyle about a year ago....And lost 60 lbs.
I say my 'own' diet because I did a lot of research on the ideas behind the low carb craze and found that a lot of them had merit in medical circles. A over-abundance of carbs for a long period of time will change how your body processes these. I did not subscribe totally to the Adkins or South Beach or any other diet, but created my own based on some of the principles...
Now, over the holidays I ate what I wanted...and I do have occational lapses where I indulge in pizza, chocolate and some other foods that do not fit into the guidelines that I follow....But the thing is to limit those to a weekend, or a night, and then go back to the lifestyle that you were on...
As I said, doing this I lost 60lbs and have kept it off for over 6mos...I have a TON more energy (now I just need to quit smoking) and feel GREAT!
-No White Flour....
-No Sugar, period...I use Splenda wherever possible keeping away from Aspratame
-Lots of leafy, green veggies....Spinach, Broccoli....high in fiber and nutrients
-For snacks, I eat a lot of nuts, Macadamias are my favorite
-Lots of water
-Eat at least 2 times a day...full meals....and snack throughout the day...I used to starve myself and then pig out in the evenings
-Excercise....Dance, Dance, DANCE!!!!
-I eat a lot of poultry (chicken, turkey) and NOT all red meat
I do eat Low-Carb breads and tortillas....they usually are made with whole grain wheat flour and have lots of fiber...
Initially I had 'cravings' for sugar, candy and everything....but those went away and the weight slowly came off....
So before you go slagging the Low Carb folks...just remember that some of us are not so militant...;) |

See that's good! (and by the way...60 pounds from just a diet...awesome, i'm really impressed!!!) But again you're treating food mostly as fuel for your body, and I just can't do it...I just love good food - but for that I excercise a lot and keep healthy. I can't lie to ya, I love sugars, I love carbs, and I'm not a crazy veggy eater to be honest. BUT...what you need to do is count the calories - you need to burn more than what you consume and the bottom line is that this is the only way to lose the weight. :)
By the way I LOOOOOOVE chocolate and just recently found out that the one I like (the dark bitter type chocolate) is actually very healthy and is quite low in calories. WAHOO!!! :p (pretty much the purest form of the coco bean)
But anyway back to what I was saying...lots of cardio, lots of working out in the gym (not trying to be a body-builder just burning calories once again and trying to get lean)...running, swimming and etc.. :) |
