Digital Record Labels; The future of the industry?

Do you think this is where the future is headed?

Do you think there are too many digital high quality mp3 download only sites as it is or is there room in the market for more? (especially Prog House sites).

My 2 cents:

I really think that this is where the industry is headed but there seems to already be an abundance of sites that provide this service.

People are going to be turning more and more to internet sources to get their music.

On the other hand, I find that you have to sift through a ton of Crap to find the odd good tune.

What do the rest of you think? Do you think that high quality mp3 sites are the future of our music scene (for the average dj that doesn't get the promos in the mail :p)?

You guys think that a new digital site dedicated to quality house/trance tunes would fly?

Cheers!

hey Sean,

Yes, this certainly is a hot topic - Mp3 distribution sites such as Beatport for instance, have a great offering --about 15-20 bucks for you to hand pick your tracks. That's way cheaper than 10 per vinyl. Plus the luxury of carrying all your tracks on CD. It's interesting to note that many big DJs are doing this these days-- to note Sasha (Alexander Coe), who recently ditched vinyl just last summer to embrace newer forms of expression in midi controlling his live sets. You can catch him at Crobar NYC for that one.

Also to mention, how Satellite Records in NYC has pitfalled. It's been a hard race to compete with the newer forms of online distribution services. They simply push out newer tracks, faster. They offer it cheaper, and they offer you, the consumer, the convenience of shopping right from your computer.

May I also add, this is cutting out the 12" distributors...

Which in many a case is a great thing, some of these companies won't sign new labels, therefore it's holding back dance music.

Online distribution, gives many labels the right to sell their own tracks or host their tracks on these online shops.....

in some cases ive heard of some mp3s selling 2000-5000 downloads... and im telling you, a label will make the same amount of profit per download as a 12", therefore they can sell many more single downloads to the general public also.

I think its a great thing...

As far as I know even labels like tidy are doing 1 12" a month and 2 releases per month on their website only...

So I guess it's important to keep in tune with all the labels and where all the tunes are.

The only thing that digital mp3 releases will do is dilute the market. let me repeat my self.

The only thing that digital mp3 releases will do is dilute the market.

Since it would be free for labels to put out mp3s or whatever. No matter how bad a track is if they sould it once they would make money.

will probably lead to the downfall of the industry, till they all go bankrupt, and everything goes back to the way it was in 5-10 years...

thats a load of crap mate

have you been to the record store lately?

80% of the records are these days!!!

its not free for labels to put up their music, hosting actually costs MONEY... and data etc...
It would free up alot of wild tracks going around... alot of talented people I know in countries other than where the major distributors are like AUSTRALIA.... and so much talent and awesome music....

its free up alot of talent.... and it still takes alot to run a proper label either way... it helps to release both 12" and mp3 sales... but you just won't find most distributors giving distirbution deals to anyone anymore unless your a superstar dj.

I know guys whove had contract offers by huge labels wiht some of the medium size distributors, and he said no... because he wanted control but the same distributors won't sign him.

anyway just my say and you have yours

personally, records take forever to arrive in the shop, they cost a fair bit and iw aste 3 hrs going through 40 to buy 2.

it takes me 30 seconds to download samples and got hrough hundreds of tracks on mp3s.

Well, for what it's worth. An industry insider (connected to one of the bigger trance label groups in Europe) told me that some major labels are serious considering ditching vinyl all together.

I don't know which labels this would be but the point is, the industry is thinking seriously about what to do in the following years.

well obviousely u have to concider it, since all you need is some space on the net, and they are set. But if they do that, they would lose money from me, and many more that are not going to pay for them.

the legality issue will become a big thing(in clubs and on radio). You would never be able to tell if somone is playing a legal or illegal mp3.

YEP

No pressing costs.

unlimited amounts of people can buy the track also... from your DJ, to your every 15 yr old kid who just wants the single.

So maybe from selling 1000 records, you will get 10,000 downloads.

Who knows, im up for them both.
