Thats 2008 (I think).
They wanna reduce downforce to around 25% of current levels, and slightly widen the track of the cars. This will improve mechanicla grip and allow that close following and hopefully help overtaking. Should be good if it happens as planned.
This is in addition to having foot operated clutches and fully manual H pattern gearboxes, supposedly to highlight driver skill.
But the way F1 is going at the moment, there might not be a category in 08! |

Im not that sure if gear boxes need changing, I much prefer the idea of hand mounted ones in terms of safty and the g-forces the divers have round corners, foot operated cluthces however are a excelent idea, much more skill needed to use them effectivly from the start and at pits |

I only started watching F1 in 2003 and i was just wondering...was there a lot of tyre manufacturers before then or has it been michilen & bridgestone for quite a while?
Oh, and i thought the british gp was just as exciting as indianapolis. Barely any overtaking at all. :( |

| it used to be goodyear, then bridgstone joined, then good year left, then michelin joined |

| Pretty much every tyre manufacturer you can think of has been involved in F1 at some point, But yeah, in recent times (like the last 10 years or so) its been Bridgestone only, then Bridgestone and Michelin. |

Those times would then be added together to form the final grid order.
Proposal two also removes fuel and lap stipulations, and builds up to a 15-minute shoot-out between the top five drivers.
Every 15 minutes, the slowest five drivers are withdrawn from the session, until only the quickest five remain for a final showdown over the leading grid spots.
The lower positions would be set as soon as each batch of five cars was asked to ‘retire’ from qualifying.

The F1 qualifying system has been repeatedly altered since the old one-hour format was scrapped at the end of 2002.
The changes have all been made in the interests of shaking up the grid order to make the races more unpredictable and therefore provide more excitement for fans.
But this laudable aim hasn’t always been achieved, and many drivers, teams and fans would welcome the end of the one-lap system. |
wow, i don't like the new proposals at all. why can't the FIA just keep the quali format simple?
i voted for the current format. we're used to one-lap qualifying now, and i like the unpredictability of the strategies. if they revert to low fuel qualifying, we'll be having the same old pit stop windows again, just like before. |

I've always thought for years that they should have points up for grabs in qualifying - just a couple for pole or maybe a few spread out for the top three.
They must be thinking of this route beacuse they asked if points should be offered for qualifying in the recent FIA survey.
Teams lower down would surely jump at the chance to get a few points - messing up the grid and allowing for more tactics.
I say stick to single lap qualifying with the fuel you intend to race with and have points for the top three. Five, three and then one maybe? then we'd see who's got skill. |

| The idea of the top 5 shootout in qualifying doesn't seem to be too bad they use it in V8 Supercars down here in Australia, elminating each batch of 5 drivers until 5 left will provide more of a mixed up grid every week than usual. |

that's probably because the frontrunners encounter traffic during their hot laps.. which is ok, of course, a mixed up grid is always cool.
but the main thing i don't like about these proposals is that the team are able to choose a strategie until right before the race. everyone will be pitting at the same time again in the race, just like before.. we'll be having more one- and two-stop strategies as well, instead of three- or even four-stop strategies (M.Schumacher in Magny-Cours last year). the current system seems to allow more diversity, which is what we want, right?
the current format is just fine.
i agree with Fielden, though, that points could spice things up even more. 5 points is way too much, though.. that equals 4th. place in the race :eek: 1 point for pole will do. |

Wtf was Monteiro trying to do there with Villenueve.. not going to defend him at all, i think he clearly turned to stop the overtaking. If he didn't saw Villenueve coming, why did he turn so suddenly? Anyway that's 12 finishes in a row, still hasn't retired, quite impressive. |
