For those of you who think youll look stupid in the gym

I just threw 135lbs onto squat rack cuz ive never done them and that seemed like a pitiful amount of weight...and im pretty sure it is..anyway. i didnt wanna be that guy who only goes halfway down so he can do more weight.

so i do like 3 of them getting progressively lower making sure im gettin form right. on the 4th one I go down a lil too far and almost cant get back up. barely do. I see a guy watching me with a slightly worried expression on his face. I go down for another and do it wrong again. Im just sitting there ass like a cm away from the floor squatting for like 5 seconds with the beginnings of panic in my brain. wtf do I do. The other homie gets up and starts walkin over so I do a little bounce and am able to get momentum to get back up. barely hehe.

He looks at me and says "haha thank God dude, I thought you were gonna throw out your lower back and i was gonna have to watch!"

Moral: ive ben goin there for multiple years and ive seen this guy pretty much 3x a week for the last year. Never really talked. First real words spoken today except for "can I get a spot" or something.

and I still managed to look like a dumbass. I just laughed and said Ive never done em before and then lowered the weight to 25s on each side. so i was squatting 95 lbs.

you heard it. 95 lbs.

So dont worry bout looking stupid. cuz ive done stupid stuff like this a lot. but you learn :D and no one gets pee sprinkles in their pants from laughing so hard.

Id put this in workout thread but who knows who reads that ;)

edit: I was doing them slightly lower than parallel not ass to the floor. it just feels like that when you got your weights on :D my bad for explaining improperly in first place!

Ya, I dont squat either for the same reason of squating with only 25 lb weights on each side & I would probably have a tough time with that.

At least THIS didnt happen to you.:nervous:

i really don't see the point of going down that far...i don't even think i could hehehe...

full range :D i go down so my ass is like...1.5 feet off ground. My bodybuilder friend and the other huge guys i saw in the gym all did it. kicks your ass :) feel a lot better than half squat

as for looking stupid in the gym... my ex did one of those super embarassing trip-and-fall-and-get-hurled-into-the-wall-by-the-treadmill things. he still has the scar on his shin from burning the skin off on the treadmill.

is that why he is your ex?

I'd dump his ass too for that.

You need to find someone to show you how to squat. Going ass to the floor will only result in injury. Just keep your chin up and go a little below parallel, depending on what sort of stance you're doing (easier to go lower with a wide stance; narrow stance works the quads more and can't keep your balance if you go down too far).

And like you said, the true gym rats don't care how they look to others. I don't squat more than 155, even though I could if I wanted to look tough, because my knees get a slight shake and that is bad for your hips. It's all about your form, the weight.

Edit: Just saw your other post. Just so long as you're not bouncing your ass off the floor, 2 feet or so is alright. ;)

yeah hehe...its not totally down. its like...as far down as makes sense hehe. I tried going down further and it was like...nope. not gonna happen. my second set I was able to go up to 35s on each side and wasnt going down quite so far and it felt better.

:D

I didnt turn red and walk away was the point hehe. nobody really cared. just glad i didnt get hurt lol

dont go down all the way, just go till your quads are parallel to the floor. Make sure to keep your back arched while doing it. This will keep the strain off your lower back and knees.
