That statement is bull.
midle class americans probably have a higher standard of living, lower class swedes however have a much higher standard of living than lower class americans. |
While agree with your bull-comment, I think that the validity of middle class Americans being better off than middle class Swedes really depends on what you mean by standard of living. My roommate is emplyed as a computer scientist, and can afford a decent apartment in Manhattan as well as eating out all the time. I would say that he is definately middle class. However,
- he has only one week of vacation time in a year
- his foot has been hurting for three weeks now, and he choose to buy a walking stick rather than check with his doctor "because it's cheaper"
- in case he get's sick for a long time he will get fired.
These are problems no middle class person in Denmark would need to address, and I guess it's the same for Swedes. |

You are so right!!! i only thought about it in a strictly economic perspective, which is wrong to do. |

It's the ideology.
those “bums” are “produced” by the system. The system runs according to an ideology which (amongst many areas) advocates how the economy should be organised. |
Those "bums" are there because they want to be.
There's no excuse in a free market to be poor or on the street.
Uneducated in the ways of personal finance more like; which again can be rectified.
Barring some total personal catastrophy or mental illness there really is no excuse.
Sure that may seem harsh but there are just waaaay to many rags to riches stories in an ideology that rewards people who strive for success and contributes to their society. |

firestarter, are you implying that people are responsible for their own behavior and the decisions they choose to make in life??? That's crazy talk! We know that everyone is just the victim of impersonal cosmic "forces" that mysteriously act on us and decide where we end up on the economic ladder. Individual choice has nothing to do with it.
Marx told us so. |

I'd rather be a socialist than a cut-throat capitalist. You need a balance. America is a crap place to be if you need genuinely welfare support medication or healthcare. Apparently they only get 2 weeks leave a year max. That's totally unfair.
On a government/welfare level, I'd rather live in UK than USA anyday. We slag off the NHS alot over here but we don't know how lucky we are! |

apparently, you are misinformed, though probabaly not to a huge degree. It is true that many workers only get 2 weeks of paid vacation per year(vs. the 1 month sabbatical that Europeans get to take, of which I am surely jealous). However, that doesn't take account independent contract workers who may only work a few months out of the year(if they're having a great year), or workers who have held the same job for several years(I have had my current job for 5 years and I get 4 weeks of paid vacation, 2 personal days and as many sick days as an honest man might require. In any event, the corollary to your defense of socialism logically follows that socialism is a lazier, less competitive, less productive social structure. In socialism it's from each according to his ability and to each according to his need--there is little to no incentive to work harder or to be more innovative when your take-home would not reflect such increased efforts. I'll take Capitalism, thank you, but that's also coming from a capitalist!

You mean you'd rather be taken care of than to care for yourself, right?

You mean you'd rather drive on dirt roads rather than our federally funded highways, right?
You mean you'd rather have more of the elderly and the disabled wallow in poverty because they're too damn old and disabled to take care of themselves, right?
You mean you'd rather have the elderly pay for their own damn healthcare so they could stop borrowing so much damn money from everyone else because they're too damn old and we shouldn't give a rat's ass about them anyway, right?
You mean you'd rather fight wars with small, private militias, right?
You mean you'd rather have our kids find some other ing way to get an education rather than have everyone actually give a little so we can assure they can read and right, yes?
You mean you'd rather have polluted industries govern themselves rather than have regulations because, well, they adhere so well to self-governance when it comes to the environment, right?
Generalizations are fun and all, but you would do us all well by examining the argument in full. I do believe _Ocean_Drive_'s following statement was:
Which history has clearly shown to be correct. Unless, of course, you appreciate the quality of life better during the Industrial Revolution. I think most here would tend to disagree. |
