Its funny how someone actually admits to wearing a bunch of A+F and popping their collar. Some people have no shame.

Don't be an Abercrombie bitch.

I once saw a real fat slobby guy wearing a shirt that said Abercrombie & Fitch. It was an atrocity, he should have been jailed or shot or both. Theres a reason they don't make sizes bigger than medium.

hehe well if you act that elitist about something, people are going to be envious, or call you idiots
so he's envious, and we're calling you idiots

Popping your collar?

There has been a recent epidemic that has been sweeping across college and high school campuses throughout the country, which is a new fashion, trend called "popping the collar." This also has been referred to as "collar flipping."

What is a "popped collar?" A popped collar is when the collar on a shirt is flipped, raised, or popped up and is usually seen on a polo or button down shirt. Apparently, people have forgotten how to dress themselves and need to be informed about the serious consequences of popping your collar. I am not a person of extreme style or fashion; I do not shop at Saks Fifth Avenue or other designer stores such as those. As an amateur people watcher, I have begun to notice a certain few fashion trends that even I, a person with little background, cannot handle. I consider this a crime against fashion along with leisure suits and tie-dye.

A good portion of college campuses around the country are beginning to be taken in by this new fashion trend. It is believed to have started in the Hamptons, by many white-collar preppy rich children who have been spoiled throughout their lives and apparently were dressed until they went off to college and had to dress themselves. As many high school students do, they try to imitate certain college students and their lifestyles. This led to the epidemic spreading even faster to groups of people who are no longer just white-collar. Many public high school students who shop at such fashion trend-molding stores as Abercrombie and Fitch, American Eagle, and Hollister have been controlled by popular opinion, which also aided the collar popping trend.

I am a freshman college student who attends a stereotypical upper class school filled with spoiled children living off their parents' trust funds. While in high school I began to notice one or two misguided youth who popped their collars, but it was not as prominent as it is now. While on campus, I have met some of these collar poppers and have not met one who is down to earth and does not think that they are better than other people because of money, what they wear, and how they act. The popped collar has become the symbol of snobs and wannabes alike. There are many alternative methods for a person to express themselves, which is why this trend bothers me so much.

I recently spent a day with my collar flipped around my college campus where collar poppers are generally accepted. During this time period I did feel tougher and cooler, even though I was still the same person. I was looked down on by more people who did not pop their collars until I explained to them the situation. I was not looked at more or less by girls, and was uncomfortable by the flaps, which itched, at my neck. In addition, I did not have any financial gain during this time.

This epidemic needs to be put to an end before it has completely engulfed the gullible youth of the nation. There are still some sensible teenagers out there who can still properly dress themselves so that they can be part of a better America. These collar poppers who believe they are tough and cool must be shown that they are neither though nor cool, and if they are it is not because they pop their collars.

Even though this is a popular trend among teenage college and high school males it has also begun to spread among females of the same age. The problem with this is that it had spread much quicker than it did in the males and has caused multiple females who at one time were considered down-to earth, have now become snobbish and rude, pretend to be a better person then they were before, just because they cannot dress themselves either.

Many guys who pop their collars tend to like girls who pop their collars because they are under the impression they are almost as good as them. This statement may not be cold hard fact but it was shown in the collections of questions surveyed throughout various websites, my own interrogations, polls, and other investigations into the dilemma. Also, the girls who pop their collars tend to be more attracted to the guys who pop their collars because they believe they are tough and cool and the girls who pop their collars have become so shallow that they cannot perceive a different opinion.

After surveying multiple people, those who pop their collars and those who do not, I have collected three main reasons why people possibly pop their collars. The first reason: forgot to fold it down. This reason is probably the easiest to understand and deal with; the problem with this is why it was up in the first place. It takes less than five seconds of your valuable time to fold down your collar; this could be done while possibly waiting for your latte to be prepared.

The next reason for the popping of one's collar is possibly to keep the neck warm and/or protect from the sun. This reason has no common sense or support to it since there are such great inventions as scarves, turtlenecks, and sunscreen. If you do not like these alternatives, do not go outside.

The last reason, and the most prominent response I was given is that people pop their collars to want to appear "cool." People tried to explain that Elvis and James Dean both popped their collars, and this statement is in fact true, but Elvis and James Dean popped the collar on their leather jackets while either riding a motorcycle or doing something else tough (unlike the collar poppers of today who have their Polo shirts popped while they're driving their BMW on the way to the country club after leaving Starbucks).

If while walking down your street you happen to encounter a person with their collar popped, please take the following precautionary steps: first do not panic, although this is not a test, calmly walk up to the person and kindly ask them to "please flip down their collar." If this does not work, action may need to be taken on your part and you may have to fight through the starch of the collar and put it down yourself. The next step that needs to be taken is to inform the person of the serious consequences that come from the popping of the collar.

There are actually many organizations nationwide that one can join in order to help stop this horrible epidemic. The Anti-Popped Collar Club (APCC) is one of the foremost organizations that help stop this problem. They have members nationwide and accept even more members everyday. Many college newsletters also have published articles on this subject if one would like to read more on it before making a decision. If the popped collar is not stopped what is in store for future generations?
