Yeehaw... I'm gonna do it! First time ever! (argh, it went all wrong!)

I'm reformating my computer. I've intensively exploited my compy for 5 long years, and now, according to my beliefs, it's time for it to die and re-incarnate with an utterly revamped look.

Anyway, how often do you guys do it? Is there anything I should know before proceeding (other than backing my files up).

i'd like to know this too. i'm a reformatting virgin.

i do it way more often than i should, about once ever 1-3mos. i like the fresh feeling when everything opens exactly when you ask it to. i used to be really bad, like once a week!

Oh noes!

Just back your files up and make sure you have your setup CD ROMs and everything in order beforehand.

So am I, reason why I'm wondering about very stupid things such as "How am I going to reinstall Windows, is there anything I should keep so my computer recognises my CD drive?".
UWM
I used to reformat every six months or so, but now I haven't reformatted my home PC in probably 2 years because I never use it.

Where are my CD-Rom setups? Autoexec.bat,...?

(I mean, if I reformat, the configuration kept by Windows would be useless, right?)

Edit: My brother is telling me that, after I use the "format C:" thingy, I can insert a drive in the CD-Rom after resetting and there wil be no surprises.... this is what he's heard though, he's not sure.
MaxTO
1) back-up data
2) make sure you have your installation disks
3) I like to download onto a CD the latest drivers for whatever hardware I have before re-formatting rather than afterwards

Yeah, as long as you have the start-up CD-ROM that came with your computer when you purchased it you should be good to go.

just put in your windows cd, itll guide you through the whole thing. itll ask you if you want to install windows, say yes, pick the active partition, itll format it, and reinstall. cd drives are plug n play for the most part so you dont have to worry about that at all
