another thing is, a lot of clubs / raves that i've been to else where (europe, asia, california) are not always better than the guv. in europe and california, people could get way more ed than those in the guv, it kinda scared me at first. and it gets over packed in clubs around the world, that's nothing new. dont get me wrong though, i'm not saying that guv should be like this when they could've done way better. i'm just saying that people whose never been to the guv might enjoy it.

You guys complain way too much

Other cities would kill for a place like the guv. Grow up.

No one complains about Boa because it has a lot less to complain about than Guv.

Or better yet, you can stop worrying so much about what other people post and STFU.

LOL! Funny how you say this when you're the one "worrying" when other people bash the Guv or Mark Oliver.

I used to work at the guv, and was able to hear him from week to week, and it seemed as tho he'd simply play to the style of the headline DJ. Or on nights when he was going solo, he'd just play the style of music that was 'flavour of the month' [which was progressive house/trance at the time]. Instead of focusing on developing his own unique sound, it seemed as tho his was borrowed from whoever was popular at the time.....

You're absolutely entitled to your opinion....Funny how I think the EXACT opposite! MARK OLIVER does indeed have his unique style of music..
I can go on and on..but hey this is a neverending battle on TA..

Most of the 'smack talk' towards the Guvernment has, and always will be the amount of people they pack in for special events. I cant comment on how its been lately, since i have sworn to never go back since the Porter/Sasha party. The reason you dont hear these kind of complaints at Boa, is because we simply DO NOT over capacitate. Yes, the cover price is higher, but you know when attending a party you will have plenty of room to mingle and dance as you please.

So, How will the Guv be tomorrow since it's all ages?
Fun eh?

I understand EVERYONE's point of view here....
But dartrance's quote is 100% true.

I'm not the biggest Guv supporter, NO ONE likes the well-known
"cracked out asians" problem, but i do "love the Guv".
You cant deny the volume of headliners coming thru there.

I always have a great time there cause i'm only there
for bigger events or DJs i really wanna see - which is about 5-6X/yr.
Could never go there every weekend or 2....

Either way, been all over Europe, and the Guv is world-class
when it comes to regularity of talent it brings in, hands down.

but whatever, dance away, have a smoke, take a half hour walk to the KH, calm down, breathe, then go back in.

You realize that the Koolhaus is not open on the majority of nights, right?

It's not the all-access events people complain about, it's the main-room events. When it's only *parts* of a club that are packed, and there's someplace you can go to get some personal space and breathe, then that's fine. It's when you're sardined with no escape that's the problem.

theres always room if you want it....... dont listen to these losers

expect to have a GOOD TIME

I have to address this.

You are very right. He DOES play to the style of the guest DJ. Why? Because otherwise the night would not flow at all. Would it make sense to pounf out raging techno before a guest dj who plays prog or trance? I dont think so. Would it make sense to play trance after a disco house or prog guest dj? No it would not. I think the fact that Mark can play to just about any guest that comes in is a very strong point. All too often other DJs will play what their "style" is ie) what they like regardless as to what's going on.

Did you ever go to Guvernment in 1996? Well I did. The place closed at 3:30 and it was commercial house all night. Mark Oliver has taken that club from that to what it is today. He was pretty much the only dj playing trance on a large scale back in 97 and 98 while everyone else was focused on house. Once the trance scene died out and it became stale he progressed into the style he plays today. Is that borrowing from whatever is popular at the time? No, I'd say thats progressing with the times. Look at just about ANY international guest that has been around longer than 5 years and you will see a progression in their styles as well. Look no further to one Mauro Picotto who will be guest Djing this weekend for an example of that. Again what you call a weakness, i call a strength.

To me a really great DJ should bring an experience to the listener, bringing their own flair to their sets. Sean Miller has a sleazy dirty groove to his sets, Addy has pounding tribal, and Matty Colridge [if NYE is any example] has a very unique acid style. I don't get that kind of feel from a mark oliver set.

Mark brings a nine hour experience that flows through the genres thus allowing us to not get bored with one particular style. I think id go f-ing crazy if the whole night consisted of pounding tribal, acid techno, trance, or any other genre for that matter. Flow is important but so is changing it up.

Sly_Guy
again, I get flamed for not liking mr oliver.

I do agree that he should play to the style of the headline DJ. That's his job, and at the guvernment, where they bring in many different types of DJs that's a tough job to be that versatile. I never bashed him for doing his job as a warm-up DJ.

I admit, I wasn't listening to mark oliver in 1996, but from every set I've heard of his from 1998 and on, I have yet to be wowed with inventive track selections, or pushing the boundaries of experimental genres. You say look at international headliners who've been around a while, and you'll see progression of style, I agree, but the way they change their style is by inventing something new, picking up a new sound and playing it completely, being a pioneer in that new style. Like I said above, after hearing him week in and week out while I worked at the guv, I didn't get that feel from him. Being able to ID most of the tracks he played when apparently he's got 20,000 records at his disposal doesn't impress me either.

Justifying my distaste for his style was something I didn't want to do, because I knew I'd get flamed for it, but it looks like I took the bait for Detroit Joe here.
Jayx1
I didnt flame you. I respect your difference of opinion even if I don't agree with it.

Flaming you would be more like "WTF, ARE YOU AN IDIOT? WHAT ARE YOU THINKING?"
