Any of you drink any Australian wine? :D :D

I love my Penfolds. :D

i have been drinking alot of aussie wines since i moved here. i like pinot noir's and sauvignon blancs but i cant find ones that are inexpensive enough, so i dont get them that much as i would like to. i like cabernets sometimes depending on my mood. i really dont like chardonnays.

since you work in a bottle shop could you make a few reccomendations? i find the wines here are soemwhat inexpensive, so if oyu could make some nice suggestions that would be great and that wont break the bank, but wont give me a headache either. i also like the semillion with s. blanc and soemtimes with chardonnays, but the chard has to be lite in flavour if that makes any sense. also i like verdelho.

thx :D

MY RECOMMENDATIONS:

Peter Lehmann Semillon - very clean, refreshing flavour, a great wine for lunches. This would go well with chicken or fish.

Houghton White Burgundy - another excellent white that isn't too expensive. It's from Western Australia (from memory), and it's awesome. Not for everyone, but i love it.

Taylor's Shiraz. - it won the London Wine Show prize for best Shiraz a while ago i think. It's very good value for the price - usually about $10 from Dan Murphy's i think. Up to about $15 at other bottle shops. I don't really know if you like Shiraz though

Sauvignon Blancs - definitely go for the New Zealand wines i posted about earlier in this thread if you are going to have Sauv. Blanc. Best in the world. Usually around $10 - $15 i think. There are still some nice Aussie ones, but i can't think of the names at the moment, sorry...

Moondah Brook Verdelho - another WA wine. I think it's from the Coral Coast region or Margaret River...i can't remember which.

I can't really remember too many more at the moment. Sorry :p

I'm not a big drinker of wine, but i know a bit. For reds, Penfolds are always good. The Rawson's Retreat and Koonunga Hill Penfolds wines aren't that expensive and they are very high quality. I really like Hunter Valley Wines as well, like Mcguigan's. Both the red and white wines under Mcguigan's black label are nice.

If you ever go to Theo's Bottle Shop (where i now work), check out Crocodile Rock wines. We have the Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Merlot. They are only about $3.30 a bottle, reduced from $10! Crocodile Rock was made by Mcguigan's, and it was originally destined for export for the US market, but they didn't end up doing it so Theo's bought the whole vintage. They were trying to emulate the success of Yellow Tail apparently :p. Anyway, it's heavily reduced in price and it's good every day drinking wine if you want something that's good value. We have sold loads of it (probably about 20+ dozen a day).

thank you so much for your suggestions!

that white burgundy caught my eye, just b/c i love red burgundy's so much....

will check out the shiraz too, i dont mind them. if you find out the names of any aussie sav blancs that are good PM me, b/c i want to stick to aussie wines while i am here.

where is theo's? i am living in caringbah at the moment. so far from everything :(. it is only temporary though :).

Sorry dude, but i tried the Clos du Bois Merlot AND Cabernet Sauvignon 2003 and they both SUCKED! lol

my favorites up to date are:

From Rioja
Coto de Imaz 1995 gran reserva
Coto de Imaz 1998 reserva

Merlot
Estola 1994

Pinot Noir
Louis Jadot 2001
Kings Estate (forgot the year lol)
La Crema 2001

and a spanish wine called:

Montecillo gran reserva 1998

Most of these wines are Spanish. I love spanish wine and of course you can see i only drink red wine. As for the one's that are not french....kings estate is from california (one of the few pinot noir's that isnt from France that i like, and the rest are french.

We have wine parties every week....my knowledge is going to grow with time....and i definitely need to buy that damned wine rack :tongue2

I just finished a Louis Jadot... love the Pinot Noir... another smooth wine is the J.Lohr Valdigue Merlot. Has anyone had Tikal (amorio) ??? It's a beautiful label. I'm not 21 but would always save the bottles from work. I believe its a Argentenian Malbec? I could be wrong. Someone help me out. Would also like to try a Shiraz and Opus One (merely because everyone flips out when they sell a bottle of Opus, its expensive and was just wondering if it was highly overrated. I take that back. I'm not a connesuier (sp) so i guess i wouldn't really know. I just know what I like). I"ll definately be looking through here for recommendations. It amazes me how the costs of bottles in restaurants are doubled than compared to liquor stores. Can anyone recommend any good sites with great forums as to wine knowledge? Thanks.. I just have to post a pic of the Tikal label. Edit: Hmmm no success finding it. Menage a Trois is another good Merlot, also offered in Cab. CAn't go wrong with the name ! I know this may sound a bit weird but I love the mild burn sensation i get in my nose when drinking a red w/ mild tannins. I don't know if its too common but love it. I dont drink much at all.. but would probably choose a glass of wine over a mixed drink.. unless it was a margarita.
