Hi,
First of all, I have checked the "Where to find quality samples" thread, but after visiting most of the sites I still haven't found the kind of quality kick samples that artists like Kyau vs Albert, Above & Beyond, etc.. use. It really makes me desperate! :(
Here are some tracks with the kind of kicks (and claps) I am looking for. Enjoy the tracks! :)

I hope this give a good idea what kind of kicks I am looking for.. essentially the kind of quality kicks and claps used in "driving trance". Could everybody PLEASE dive into there library and post some very good usable kicks like these perhaps also matching claps and stuff. It would be great if eveybody could contribute. I would really appreciate it alot! :)
PS: if you don't have any upload space, just post a reply and mention it and I will try to find upload space if you want.
Thanks! :) |

I really do know what you mean, but the answer is that it doesn't work that way in reality :) (don't we wish it did). The answer has been right in front of you the whole time - use your current kick samples and compress/tweak/whatever-the-hell-makes-go-boom-boom out of them. If you rip a good kick from a vinyl and then use it in your track, you will be about this happy with it in your track ---> |---| <---
Not very happy. Sad :(. Once in maybe 100 times you'll get lucky and find a single sample kick that you barely have to tweak to fit your track. The rest - it's all kick building. It's just as much of an art as composing.
Mindset shift for you: Because a kick is a perc, you may view it in the same manner you view a bass drum. Don't think of a kick (for "driving" tracks) like that! Think of it as a low frequency punch in your track with some high frequency bite and compression, etc., which RESEMBLES the sound of a bass drum. If you think of it like that, you'll make it fit in your track like you would any other channel.
I'll build a quick kick and upload it, posting all the parts.
It needs to get to where you can build the kick around the track instead of the track around the kick (because who wants to base composition on a kick, right?). It's so hard to do :( I hope I'll be able to do it one day =D |

first of all you must remove that call on me type remix or at least place a warning before the link that says 'WARNING! LISTENING MAY CAUSE YOU GREAT DISTRESS! WARNING!'
with that out of the way. synthesize your own kick drums. dont rely on other people to do it for you. chances are you wont like the results. having spent ages looking for psy kick drums i eventually found that making them in soundforge ended up with the best results. now i make some of my hihats in soundforge too.
also, theres alot of post processing involved to make it really work. id say half the job is post processing. i dont know about those but i overdrive my kicks, filter them and EQ and compress them. use a variety of low frequency stimulators.
but going back to building them - the principle is easy.
soundforge. select tools from the drop down menu. then synthesis. then FM. generate a 60hz sine wave. you'll get a nice long flat 60hz response. sounds warm and smooth. now go to process in the drop down menu. then effects. then pitch and select pitch bend.
you will now be greeted with a pitch envelope. this is where you shape the basic sound of your kick drum. experiment with various slows. a linear downward slope will create a laser type sound as the pitch drops uniformly. make it more concave and the laser sound becomes faster like certain hard psy kicks. if you make it even more concave it will have a very quick high pitched click and drop down quicky.
if you set the curve so that it is convex you get more typical 909 style kick drums more convex and they begin to sound more like 808 kick drums. experiment with the slope.
also experiment with 1 or 2 pitch bends. i tend to pitch bend it once. then do it again with a different slope of interesting effects. once you have a nice dynamic you are happy with. bounce it down. export it to your host. hi cut using a filter or an EQ. light overdrive. compression routine. see how it sounds. |

| Don't get me wrong, but I am so tired of people always writing that you should make your own kicks etc.. I am simply not capable of creating great kicks, no matter what I try! It's also no secret that most pro producers get there kicks from sampleCD's or rip them from vinyl, so all I ask if you have some really good samples of trance kicks and claps, PLEASE share them! |

man. what a great attitude you have. you do have to 'try' you do know this? anyone can make their own stonking kick drums if they put the effort in and stick with it.
good luck finding that 'magic' perfect sample cd kick.
even if you did find it, it would probably still sound like because you would be too lazy to post process it and fit it into the mix. |

lol! *high five*
If you really think pros rip a lot of their kicks from vinyls, Dance123, I urge you, go rip the kick from tiesto's remix of southern sun (there are 8 bars at the beginning with only the kick playing, so you can be lazy and not do anything to isolate it), and then use that in all your tracks. You'll be set for life! :) |

Keep trying. Try new techniques. Keep trying. Read music magazines to get inspiration. Keep trying. Scour message boards. Keep trying. This is hard work, music production doesn't come easy.

If pros buy sample CD's, and we bought sample CD's, then why would we want to just share the samples we paid for? |

The more you tweak, the more you learn, IMHO. |
