ok...here is my opinion. trance today is a bit "fluffier" than it used to be...i still like some trance djs. more specifically the ones that play the darker/harder stuff. ie. j00f, saw him for the 1st time in october...absolutely amazing. but j00f aside, alot of trance that i've heard just doesn't do it for me...im gonna be one of those ppl that says "trance was good in 99" because god dammit it was ing amazing in 99. like lost witness, grace (little older), man with no name, paul oakenfold, older tilt stuff. that was amazing...but now im a little older and my tastes have changed. im just not in to the long drawn out melodies and rolling bass lines of today's trance. i.e. armin van buuren...he plays ALOT of the same sounding stuff, all with similar basslines where the mixing is track 1 mix track 2...maybe some sampling, but nothing amazing.

then you have the world of house. vocals, keyboards, different drums...FUNK. thats what i'm saying here, funk as far a the ear can hear. i love that ...the dirty, sexy, house sound you just can't find in trance.

i hate house, it is hip hop to me. if a guy likes house, it might be
reasonable he does not like trance. they are different. that does
not mean trance sux :tongue3

saying that, i personally do not like housers post on trance forum
to promote house. although, they are free to do so; if i liked house,
i would go to the appropriate forum :tongue2

Nice opinions!

Personally I have nothing against house, I'll admit before I was fully dedicated to trance, I was into the older hardhouse. But see, I like the way house sounds, I love the way trance feels. I hit the alpha state with trance, emulating true happiness. For me, it does not get any better than that, but electronica as a whole is great I will not put down any other genre because of my personal preference (at least in electronica ;) )

Funny you mention about trance being fluffier now than it used to be...then say '99 was amazing...cause I think trance back then was fluffier than it ever was...and with that, it was AMAZING!!

But what people consider "fluff" these days is different than back then.

Put it this way...when I hear most trance today...I know EXACTLY where the song is going. Throw an easy little beat in or melody, repeat it, have one or two buildups that end in uber drumrolls and we're set.

Talk about predictable.

I don't think that is necessarily a bad thing. It just follows it isn't your thing. At least at this point in time.

Sometimes a bit of familiarity is a good thing. As long as it's form over formula.

Trance has just gotten a bit comfortable for me. Instead of aiming for the stars it need to start reaching for the stars.

That takes some effort.

Trance ain't dead. Trance is just lazy.

Trance needs a swift kick in the ass. I have a feeling it's bound to happen soon.

Capishe?

Then again, trance back then was have a HUGE synth going throughout the song...lower the synth, slow th ebeat, then build the beat back up along with the systen then at it's peak go off with a bassline....

Pretty much the same, just these days it's more focus on building up with the bass or melody while back then the buildup was with the synth.

i'm still mostly a tranceaddict, by i'm starting to enjoy more house...here's the thing though, for me, DJs like sasha, and holden they start off too slow for me, and take their sweet as time building a set...now that would be great if they're starting the night, and then playing into the wee hours of the morning, but if my night is going to be starting at like 1am when sasha or diggers come on, then i'm not gonna be able to stay awake for the entire show....

now that given, i love trance the way that it used to be...you can't tell me that 99% of the trance that comes out today does not compare to trance that came out in the mid-late 90s....a few examples:

paul van dyk - for an angel
three drives - greece 2000
energy52 - cafe del mar
bt - flaming june (still gives me a tingling sensation)

now i know most of you will consider these songs to be slight cheesy, and mostly anthemic, but if it wasn't for these tunes right here, trance would not exist; fluffy, hard or any other kind
