i went to go see armin at a nightclub here in vancouver on friday night and i got right up close to the dj booth... literally a meter a way from him and when beatmatching ARMIN VAN BUUREN TOUCHES THE RECORD AND BRUSHES THE PLATTER...EVERY SINGLE TIME
now i remember reading on here someone saying that "you haven't mastered beatmatching unless you can beatmatch with just the pitch control"
nobody on this board can say that armin has not mastered beatmatching
so for those of you who can't do it... just remember although armin probably can do it... he doesn't
its probably faster to just touch the record i guess
oh wait... here is a pic from that night

Well i saw him at the guvernment in Toronto a couple of months ago. I was also right next to him after 4am and he also gave me the ASOT vinyl (signed) he was spinning that night. He did brush the platter a bit to get the beat but not every time, he is very capable of using the pitch controls which he did a lot of times that time and didn't feel the need to touch the platter.
My point is that i completely agree with you on the part that you cannot be considered a pro unless you use pitch only. At the end of the day it makes sense to use the style you are most comfortable with and there is no harm in doing slight adjustments to make your transition 110% perfect. :D |

He may touch the platter to beatmatch, but when he's fine tuning during the mix, he rides the pitch only touching the pitch slider. |

As long as the mix isn't live, I usually touch the platter to correct the pitch simply because its faster. When I'm in the middle of a transition tho, I only ride the pitch...sounds like Armin does this same. |

ride the pitch for transition but set up a little bit touching the platter. |

I thought riding the pitch was only effective while in the mix ... If ur just beatmatching, it wont matter if u ride the pitch or touch the platter since the crowd wont hear it? :S |

my whole point of this thread is that i was told (even on this board) that when djing, after cueing up the record and then letting go... that is (apparently) the last time i should be touching the record and beatmatching by pitch control strictly |

meh. rides the pitch, don't ride the pitch. if you can mix well flawlessly that should be all that matters. |

+1, to all of it...
And I saw Armin on Saturday night in Chicago, watched him for quite a while, and he didn't seem to favor either method when he was rocking vinyl... it went either way... |
