yes, lets base the whole indonesian constitution on their drug trafficing laws. Their drug trafficing laws are strict, but thats her own fault for ignoring. Other from that its very much liberal, especially bali which thrives on tourism.

I have been sitting back and reading all the replies and threads on the subject and damn are there some heated opinions on either side of the fence!!! Now while I am in no position to argue over the sentence handed down, I will maintain that my feeling is still 20 years is very harsh. I can't see the punishment fitting the crime here. I respect Indonesia's right to punish criminals ( Corby is now a criminal since she has been convicted.) I can only think to say that all the aussies that are truly outraged should and will be encouraging the tourist population to avoid the Bali area all together. I still feel so badly for the girl and wish thay it turned out much differently, I hope her family and the government of Australia are trying to reason with the government of Australia at this time, but after the outbursts from the family and the supporters of Corby I think they may be a bit more reluctant to deal. A horrible situation that has definitely made me appreciate my freedom and I am in Iraq right now..... is that even freedom??? hmmm... maybe a poll ? here!

edit:: If the tourism decreases enough in the area maybe that will be enough to send the Bali government into a retreat and force them to lighten the sentence. Not likely really, but I just want this girl out of jail prior to her 47th year.

Oh well it's the local law and if you don't want to accept it so be it.
Regardless or her innocence/guilt I think most people in such a situation would claim it was planted there to try and escape.

If Australia starts a campaign against tourism in Bali buhaha let me laugh a bunch.
What about all the aborigenes in aussie land who were killed and were blatently innocent?
Oh and let's not forget that originally aussie was a place where prisoners were sent off to. Not that I'm judging the population or anything but pulling some " Dont go to Bali " crap is just laughable.

Just a quick reminder that the laws in the US were just as harsh in regards to drug use 20 some years ago.

Hey you don't have to tell me about the drug laws in the US... I live in NY, the state with the worst and toughest drig laws in America.

the old saying comes to mind: There are 3 sides to every story, your side, my side and the truth.

The latter I doubt any of us know, and we probably never will.

On a lighter note... Yanks-Red Sox... Johnson starting. Classic rivalry in the Bronx tonight!:o

well for one they didnt finger print the bag of weed which is crazy, they also didnt test the weed for its origion, if they want a iron clad case they should do it proper...
Deepbeats183
I totally agree, there were some flaws in the way they handled this case... but like people have said she was guilty before the trial was even over.

sadness to this day.:( :( :( :( :(

Firstly, yeas it is a developing country. But its developing very quickly. It has extremely good potential both economically and socially. They've had some ed up political situations in teh past, but they are well on the way to becoming a fully democratic, developed state.

Secondly they are NOT a Muslim country. They do have Syariah courts which have jurisdiction over certain matters... but these ONLY apply to Muslim people... there is no way for a non-Muslim to come before a Syariah court. Also the Indonesian brand of Syariah is very moderate to the extent that it is not recognised by any other Muslim states as true Shariah. Other than that there is no Muslim law. According to Muslim standards, the only real Muslim nation to exist in our time was arguably Afghanistan - even Iran is technically not a Muslim nation, according to Islam.

Indonesia also has a large Hindu segment and also many Christians and Jews (the laws to officially recognise the latter as a religion in Indonesia were initiated by the former PM, Abdurrahman Wahid, a devout Muslim and leader of the worlds biggest Muslim organisation at the time).

In terms of harshness.. yes the legal system with regards to drug smuggling is quite strict there. But its also strict in Singapore... one of the most developed nations in Asia. I don't think the judgement was biased, i think they applied their laws quite well. And that's all that we canexpect if we're going to respect the sovreignty of other nations.

What does something that happened some centuries ago by some British colonists have anything to do with where we want to spend our tourist dollars? :conf:
