| in all honesty i think that it was a pretty harsh sentence, and i do think she didn't do the deed. i don't think she'll survive in jail [not death, as in lose it mentally..] it was so sad at the time, all the trial and that sh*t was broadcasted on tv, there was even a live verdict. for fu*ks sake, leave the poor girl alone. :sadgreen: |

I'm nopt saying she didn't do it. I have no idea, but I've leaning towards her being guilty (in layman's terms and in the way it is defined by the Indonesian legal system... not the Aussie or US legal systems). I was just countering the argument that it makes no sense to put weed in other people's luggage as the guy I replied to claimed. |

Another reason of the Indo ed up govt is Abu Bashir got 2.5 years for being the mastermind of the nightclub bombing & killing 202 people, indo's & aussies, but this poor chick gets busted for some weed & they seek the death penalty. She was found guilty way before the trial & I wonder if that hole justice system plays favorites with their ed up bull religion. The more I think about it is boycott the s. Hopefully their economy will hurt bad & finally the pathetic primate people living there will suffer enough to bring about change in their govt & try to get outta the 3rd world. FFS most of the country doesnt even have a decent sewer system. The next Tsunami they can take care of themselves, or can they really.? No they cant. That countrys pathetic & tourism was their only hope. The States wasnt pleaing to other countrys after any of the hurricanes in FL or 9/11. Any govt that gives a primate judge powers to kill someone or put them in prison for life without hearing all the eveidence or using technology to get evidence is ed up.
Was this chick some mastermind drug dealer.? Who knows but I doubt it. No evidence of previous history. She cant lock her luggage & it went through many many hands in the backround before it got to that hole country. The chick looks like she never even smoked a bong. Maybe if she got busted in Bali for years of dealing heroin outside all the schools & forcing it to kids, then give her 20 years. But not for some ing herb. |

There have so far been 35 people convicted of crimes relating to the Bali bombings. The shortest sentence has been 3 years, three face the death sentence. Most when saying that phrase, whether they are aware of it or not, are referring to Abu Bakar Baasyir who was convicted on "evil conspiracy" charges and sentenced to 2.5 years imprisonment. And what isn't surprising either is the length of Corby's sentence. It is as if no-one expected this harsh a sentence. Again if anyone had bothered to do any pro-active research on the matter instead of reacting irrationally afterwards then they would see that this is a lenient sentence relatively speaking.

Your completely outrageous claim reeks of ignorance and lack of general awareness. Obviously, you have not actually been to Indonesia and/or SEA(South East Asia) for that matter. Get your facts straight sonny boy. It is utter stupidity if you attempt to illegally smuggle any kind of drugs into a SEA country. When an ASEAN embassy issues you a tourist visa it is printed in bold: DRUG TRAFFICKING IS ILLEGAL AND CARRIES THE DEATH PENALTY. This woman was lucky not to get sentenced to death.
At a risk of sounding harsh, it is astounding to see the amount of ignorant and stupid 'farangs/white people' who have been sentenced for upto 50 years in the slammer all over SEA thinking that they could traffick drugs into asean countries and get away unscathed. Bear in mind, I live in Thailand which is THE tourist hub of SEA and the penalties for drug trafficking are already very harsh here despite the extremely liberal nature of the country. Malaysia and Indonesia are much worse. Add to that the extremely corrupt police officials and harsh prison conditions, you are asking for trouble.
This woman does deserve a fair trial and if she is the target of somebody else, she deserves to be released. However, if it is her own doing she deserves every bit of what she will have to bear.
I am also posting this as a warning to everyone who is planning on visiting SEA in the near future.STAY AWAY FROM DRUGS.Your 5-10 day vacation may just turn into a 20-50 year nightmare if you are not careful. Anyone who smuggles them is just plain mad and deserves whatever they get. Two books written on this topic include "The Damage Done" (Also published as "4,000 Days) and "Forget You Had A Daughter". The first is the story of an Australian male and the second the story of an English female, both who got caught smuggling drugs out of Thailand. The drugs problem is taken VERY seriously in this part of the world so don't be an idiot - stay well clear of them. |

Depends.
If you're in the capital city i.e Bangkok which is teeming with tourists, it is not such a good situtation. The reason tourism is suffering here is that backpackers can't do what they could back in the good ol' days i.e pre 2001. Nowdays, you have random but frequent drug checks at most of the clubs with urine tests going on till 3:00-4:00 in the morning. The major backpacking haven i.e Kao San Road where you will find most of the Europeans and Australians, also has drug raids but not so frequently as the clubs there less upmarket and the general area has a lot of police so things are kept in check.
The islands are a different story altogether. There you have plain clothes policeman who are out to catch anyone who is foolish enough to buy any mary jane/lsd/e or anything else from them. Yes, the plain clothes policeman often pose as drug dealers.
A friend of fine was caught along with his friends on the island of Koh Phangan which holds the notorious 'Full Moon Party'. He and his friends were asked to pay 80,000 Baht(USD 2000) apiece or else spend the rest of their days in the slammer. After paying, the policemen lit up with them ;)
This is not to discourage the tourists that come to Thailand. There is still LOADS of drug abuse , more than you can imagine. You just have to be careful and keep your guard up all the time. |
