There was a Hollywood movie out some years back called Brokedown Palace that kinda told a similar story...

What about all the aborigenes in aussie land who were killed and were blatently innocent?
Oh and let's not forget that originally aussie was a place where prisoners were sent off to. Not that I'm judging the population or anything but pulling some " Dont go to Bali " crap is just laughable.

welcome to 200 yrs ago

There have been people in Australia talking about a "boycott" of Indonesia because of this case. This case has been front page news for the past few months. Developments in the case have regularly made headlines in the nightly news and i would probably say that it has been the single BIGGEST news story in Australia this year.

I find it difficult to empathise with people who are saying that they are going to boycott an entire country because of the outcome of ONE CASE involving one single person. It seems ridiculous to me.

Indonesia is a sovereign nation with its own legal system. Yes, their legal system is different to our legal system and it may seem "unfair" to many, but who are we to pass judgement on another country's affairs? Countries all over the world have their own set of laws that people must abide by. We may disagree with those laws, and we can argue until the cows come home, but ultimately, those laws are still in place.

The good old USA is supposed to be a pillar of freedom, the shining light of democracy throughout the world. However, i can think of many examples of injustices commited by the USA that would warrant a "boycott" The rendition of "unlawful combatants", the treatment of prisoners at Guantanemo Bay and the defiance of the Geneva Convention are a good start. What about those disgraceful laws passed by the government like the RAVE act?! And what about the Freedom bill recently passed, which imposes many restrictions on personal freedoms and the rights of US citizens ???? BOYCOTT!!!!! I DECLARE A BOYCOTT!!!!!!! NEVER AGAIN!!!!!!!!

By the same logic, should foreigners boycott Australia because of:

* Our disgusting treatment of Australia's indigenous population
* Destruction of the environment for short-term gains, and our refusal to sign the Kyoto protocol. The Australian government seems to be ignoring the huge global issue of global warming at the moment
* Our treatment of asylum seekers (including women and children).
* etc etc

Well?

You failed to see what I was trying to point out. That country may be behind in regards to their law and it's lack of flexibility but not that much. It could very much change with time. It's all a work in progress around the world I believe.
Btw : no one is innocent!

As Astroboy pointed out Singapore has some very strict drug laws. Possibly the strictest in that part of the world but I don't see any boycott going in the direction of that country when you know there's been numerous cases of severe drug imprisonement.

I also can't say I'm fully aware of the details of this case but if the lady was guilty she would still be crying innocent regardless!

I'd like to say I don't believe the ruling to be fair according to Aussie standards that's obvious but it is the local law in Indonesia and anyone including citizens and tourists shall go by it when in said country. End of statement!

And to add to this:
What would your country do to someone if they found them in position of 9lbs of weed?
Possession of illegal substances
Intent to resell
Criminal misconduct
etc etc
I can't go and give out numbers but a prison sentence would go for a couple years no?
hadi burpee
lucky she didnt get death penalty. in you take the risk and get caught you gotta pay the price, all her crying and stuff doesnt really make me think she is innocent. besides, what in "gangsters" stash 9 pounds of marijuana in someone else's bag and expect to get it back

It's an old scam that runs very effectively, the baggage handlers put it in in one country, and when the plane arrives in the destination country the baggage handlers there take it out and pass it to the right people.
The other weird thing about this whole situation is that weed generally is MUCH cheaper in Bali than it is anywhere in Australia.

probably deport them :haha:
our laws over here arent that harsh

a friend of mine got caught dealing and trafficking a large amount of drugs, had over 37 charges laid and he got a $1000 fine and thats all.
My brother also got caught doing the same, there werent that many charges i think he had a total of 6, he got a $250 fine.

In regards to a non-citizen i couldnt tell you the process, because it hardly makes the news.

In relation to this case bali is a place filled with drugs and is probably the most corrupt place to go to.

Exactly, she would of got $80,000 for it in aus
and about $8,000 in bali :nervous:

But they are saying because it was aussie dope, it would sell for a higher amount

except the fact that she admitted it was hers when was caught with it at the airport, later to change her story saying it was put there.

and it wasnt just ordinary weed, which yes would be much cheaper to buy in bali, but it was hydroponic marijuana, which has a very high demand with the aussies in bali.

So you are saying it couldn't be the baggage handlers? Or the corrupt cops lying about the testiomony.

I have heard this in other forums.
