I've been hit on by gay guys a couple times.
Best time was when I was in this place I had no clue was a gay hangout. This guy comes up to me starts to chat and suddenly wants to buy me drinks and asks me if I'm there with someone special ..... it took me a tenth of a second to wake up to the fact the place was gay and why there was like NO girls there :haha:
But yeah that phone number thing either the person will be totally cool about it and you can look forward to a nice piece of pie.
Or she's totally creeped out and talking about your little note to her co-workers warning them to be careful when someone who fits your description comes next time.

I don't think it was gay, especially since you were with a guy. Good for you for stepping up and not regretting it later.
