Will the Mets take the top spot?

Let's talk about a NY baseball team that's actually doing well.
Granted the Marlins and Braves haven't finished their game today, the Mets are just half a game out of first place after the win in the first game against the Giants. A bit hard to imagine after the sweep by the Braves, eh?
The chance to take the top spot seems to be best with their upcoming stretch of games this month, against a slumping Giants, Astros, and Phillies twice (though they've been hot)
There's also interleague play, where they'll have a chance to beat up on the same teams that the Yankees beat up on - the A's and Mariners. At the current rate, they'll be able to beat up on the Yanks as well, when they meet. :p
I think the AL parks will help the Mets. They could use Diaz as the DH and still have Beltran, Cameron, and Floyd together in the lineup; or Piazza as DH and have Castro behind the plate to improve the defense. Hopefully Pedro will have a chance to improve on his 13-0 record against the Mariners. |

| I really have no idea where the Mets are going to finish. This division is wide open. We have 7 capable starters as of now and 8 once Trachsel comes back. So we have the parts to trade. We have Keppinger in AAA who is RAKING. We have Victor Diaz. I dunno... a lot of things can happen once the trade deadline hits. |

these new mets have to learn to beat the braves before they can lay claim to the top of the NL east. they've done pretty well against everyone else in the division thus far.
is there a way to move the atlanta braves back into the NL West? |

I was simply just re-writing my answer to the pool. But if you must know my reasoning: Braves have won 15 NL east crowns in a row, there closer is only going to get better througout the year, smoltz and hudson two stud pitchers , the rookie is pitching great, Furcal has has a year he is only going to improve in the last two thirds of the season. Mets cant beat them when it counts head to head either. The Marlins are also alot better team they probaby have the best 1-5 pitching staff in baseball, Lowell has a had a horrible year he will improve, cabrera is getting better everyday, when delgado sees these pitchers again he will only produce more, they have mota an actual closer, who does have a three run lead and gives up two reuns everytime and barely escapes with second and third occupied. The nationals arent a great overall team but If they continue to be in the mix to the all-star break they gm has historicaly been amazing at the deadline(side note robinson is an amazing manager: what he would do with some actual talent.Phillies have great talent Thome has been hurt most of the year he is easily capable of hitting another 30 home runs this year and carrying the team on its back. |

And not one positive thing to say about the Mets I see. Everything you've said about the other teams can be said about the Mets as well.
And the thread doesn't say "finish" in 1st. It says be in first, even if for only 1 game. But whatever... |

whos underachieving on the mets? beltran is on pace for an average year for hr;s and rbi;s for himself, his average is actually above his career average and if he steals, another 20 bases wont do much in standings. Floyd is having a career year and he hasnt been hurt yet.. no lefty reliever, looper in a big spot.. id be scared, piazza is done. cameron is on fire, everyone else to me is doing what would be expected of them. Pedro historically gets hurt and falters towards the end of seasons his body breaks down , remember he was 0-4 last september. Doug Men. is an offensive liabilty, has been past two years not much upside for him.
Give them mike sweeny and a decent set-up man and maybe they have a chance |

Doug Mientkiewicz is "underachieving." Carlos Beltran is not on pace for an average year. On pace for 20 HRs/70 RBI. His average is 27/103. So he is "underachieving." Cliff is just doing what he's capable of when healthy. His last fully healthy year: .288/.388/.533 for a .921 OPS. The year before that: .317/.390/.578 for a .968 OPS. So this isn't a career year. Pedro's August and September ERAs in 02/03/04:
1.69 and 2.65 with 37 and 17 IP.
2.90 and 0.82 with 31 and 33 IP.
2.25 and 4.95 with 44 and 36 IP.
So... one bad September in '04 means he historically falters and gets hurt at the end of the year? Interesting.
And Looper has been fine. He's not Mariano Rivera, but he's not Danny Kolb (but by your reasoning... Kolb will get better, yet Looper won't?)
But whatever... you're right. The Mets will finish last and the Yankees will finish first. |
