even with a very good computer its almost imposible to make a 10min track with vstis only. and if you are layering sounds (VST sounds) like me for example its even worse. so the question is how to find ways to prevent your pc from crashing. windows settings?? render to wav and use the loops instead of the actual synth?

the only thing i do in every track is use the sends for heavy fx (reverb etc)

so what do you do? :toothless

Project 7
Reset your pc if its been on a long time, keep your diskspace high, overclock, fxfreeze.com, http://kxproject.lugosoft.com/index.php?skip=1
PutBoy
Raise the sound buffer.
Chronosis
Avoid using heavy plugins till the end.
Render synths to wav if you run out of processing power.
Frase
bounce some parts to wav

Subtle
its impossible with my 2500+ to do everything in MIDI only.. i keep 2 or 3 tracks in VST the rest is audio and dragging CPU cause of effect usage..

but the excellent "freeze" function in Cubase.. its goes like a charm..

PS: im not talking about the actuall freeze function..:p

i installed the kx project drivers and i added (just this mornig) a gig of ram so now i have 1,5gb. but still it sucks.. all it takes is 2 vanguards, 1v-station, 2 fruity slicers + some fruity fx to send my cpu (p4 @ 2,8) to 70% and start making these awful sounds. the way i see it now (correct me if im wrong) even if you have 2 athlons and 4 gigs of ram you wont be able to work with 20vsts + the fx. so i guess the only thing that actually works is to render and use wavs.. THAT SUCKS! i like tweek ing sounds all the time and the saving, opening , rendering, saving opening, importing thing seems like a nightmare to me.

this is a huge discussion so keep up the comments and ideas ;)

Instead of more RAM, you could have bought a decent audiocard that's designed for producing. Creative cards are usually more for gaming and multimedia, so they may cause trouble when running big audio programs.

I can recommend M-Audio cards.
