What's so great about anime?

Excellent quality animation (in terms of technical quality) often with little or no computer generated graphics (for example the old Miyazaki films). Intricate storylines that are quite deep in some cases (eg. GITS). As compared to Western animation, exclusively produced for children by very large companies on huge budgets who create scripts to pander to as wide an audience as possible, and increasingly consists of computer animation.
I think it's just a unique genre... Having said that, there is a lot of crappy anime out there too. |

Spirited Away was definitely for kids, as is much anime, admittedly. But I think the storyline even in childrens' anime is evocative and intricate enough to allow adults to be kinda carried away by it without having to include a bunch of "in-jokes" for parents to giggle at as they while away the time.
Have a look at something like Ghost In The Shell or Akira (if you figure out what the hell's goin on in this one let me know!) you'll see that these are definitely not made for kids. Aside from quite graphic violence, nudity and generally shocking scenes both of the Ghost in The Shell films in particular relied a significant amount of philosophical content which would be well beyond the understanding of most children. |

If you look at the more "pornographic" Japanese animation (referred to as "hentai" - translates to Englsh as something like "pervert") it goes to a lot of VERY wrong places - tentacled, finger-penis sprouting monsters raping schoolgirls etc...
But normal anime produced for non-weirdos like GITS will contain nudity that is in good taste and not overdone.. (generally not full frontal stuff). In any case the violence alone would probably be ebough to give it or Akira an MA rating. |
