erik k cannot possibly be one of chicago's "finest" trance djs. i was on the second floor all night, right next to the booth, and just his attitude got to me during his set. during one of the songs, he had both of his arms above his head and was pointing at himself. the mixing was not that great. oh, and when you use effects, try to make sure that you don't use the flanger effect three times in a row from 11:30 to 12. once, ok. twice, pushing it. three times...just pitiful.
i was not impressed. it was like a little tiesto running around up there..."i have the biggest ego, i'm not that great of a dj, and i can shamelessly promote myself to death" erik - we paid to see FERRY, not you.
i barely even saw him in the booth while ferry was on too. i only saw him in there twice - once right after his set to ask if he could get some of ferry's alcohol, and the second to bring some chick into the booth.
thank god that ferry saved the night. |

d&g girl txt'ed me telling me to come out, but i was sleeping by 10 pm! i was exhausted from my trip to DC and NYC - and had been up all of Friday night for Sander and Lawler. Glad the TA meet-up was a success and that most of you finally got to meet each other - i'm still incognito to most of you :) |

i've told ya before and i'll say it again... you rock! :D we should definitely plan to get together before JA/JXL. looking back now i think one of my favorite parts of the night was just sitting around smoking at 7 in the morning (and the hour that followed), reflecting back on the night and talking about it.

right on. i think a lot of us got the impression that Erik K was a mini-Tiesto. personally i don't mix, but i can tell a bad transition from a good transition, and Erik K had a lot of bad transitions. it was like he wasn't even trying to sound good. i was definitely excited when he got off the decks.
as for Ferry... he played an amazing set. it was definitely unlike any other set i've heard from him. he didn't start hammering Ferry tunes until the last hour or so. i was a little out of it and unable to really get into the music but i definitely loved his set. he played a lot of stuff that i wish i could remember what it was, but i really suck at IDing. i kept waiting until the end to hear Punk, but i told Devin, he didn't play it because i didn't wear my Punk tank top!
ok, so what else... amazing turnout at Kazbar!! the TAs were out in full force. like i said, i was a bit out of it so i'm sorry that i was a bit anti-social all night. there are a lot of you that i would have liked to talk to but i just didn't have the energy to try to have a conversation over the loud music. plus, i think Devin did enough talking for the both of us.
all in all, a great night!! :happy2: |

| Good meeting everyone who I hadn't before. Between the unexpected cover band at HOB and the noise at Vision, I hope to talk to everyone next time. Due to somehow winding up with 5 drinks at once at Kazbar, I have no review of Ferry, other than remembering having fun until approximately 4 am, when I decided to walk home while crank calling people. Charley aka Tyler C was informed that his remix of BT - Force of Gravity was better than the version that Ferry played. Hope to see everyone out at the next show and we should really start planning a TA trip aboard the Magikal School Bus for Tiesto U.S.A. :) |

That's actually Ferry's own remix of FoG that he plays. He's the only one in the world who has a legit copy of it that I know. |

I dunno...I wasn't so bothered by Erik's set, I guess because I was more happy the people who came with me (non-clubbers) liked his music. I can also say that it's not that easy spinning on the system in Vision Sky. Believe me, despite those loud monitors, when you're being hit with that much sound in all directions...it gets hard to keep your mixes tight...hence why I'll never see any DJ, be it local opener or headliner doing long blends in the Sky.
Even me...I've been spinning for 12 years and I had trouble in that booth. Many more of the Spundae/Godskitchen openers and closers (I know most of them) also had trouble in that booth. It's just something that you have to be used to or try your best to work around. Guys like Ferry have been spinning in places like that on gigantic systems for long periods of time, so it's easier for them.
I also disagree with the idea that Erik K is the only decent trance DJ Chicago has to offer. There are plenty of talented trance DJs in Chicago, but they are not "connected" enough to get into the booth at Vision. That and most of these guys don't have the "following" that would attract promoters to book them. It sucks, but that's the scene for ya.
I liked Ferry's set. He was tight. I would have loved to hear "Purple Haze" by Mesh tho...guess you can't have it all. |

Believe me, I understand what it's like to play on a difficult system, hell, even on Saturday night Chris was making fun of me for not being able to deal with a certain system this last spring...
However, I felt Erik K wasn't just making a few mistakes, his whole style was just not great, he made a lot of rookie mistakes that I'd like to think that people playing out in large clubs aren't going to consistently make... And I cannot stress enough how much he needs to work on his phrasing...
And as far as long mixes in the Sky, who have you seen there? Ferry was rocking some decent length mixes on Saturday, and I think guys like Holden, Halliwell, Gabriel & Dresden, etc. would disagree with the idea of having to do "short" mixes just due to the venue...
I agree that you have to work within the confines of the system you're on, and that's definitely a lesson I've learned the hard way... I think Erik K skipped that chapeter... And as for the other openers I've seen in Chicago, they've all smoked Erik K, hard core... Guys like Mili & Brian Bauchert (I don't think I spelled that right, I mean the dude who opened for Armin and absolutely KILLED before Armin) know how to play opening sets...
I'll add to that that it doesn't surprise me that you're "non-clubber" friends liked his music... Cheese goes with just about anything :D
As for the TA quote "clubbers," well, there were quite a few of us making the "Mini-Tiesto" jokes at Vision...
Oh well... Off to record my new promo that I'm going to drop every 5 minutes when I play out...

Brian Boncher... and yea his opening set before Armin was just sick!
i was hoping Ferry would have dropped Purple Haze - Adrenaline... i'm so in love with that tune. |
