Dumb Cop, Need Advice

Okay, so I was driving around town with my girlfriend tonight. I dropped her off and then on the way home, I get pulled over. Now, right away, I'm thinking "Wtf?" He comes up to me and asks me for my liscense and stuff, I give it to him. He goes, "Do you know what I pulled you over for?" and I said no. He said someone reported me as running 2 stop signs and a stop light. I asked him if the same person reported all of them. He said yes. Then I said that I didn't run them, because I didn't. Then he kept insisting that I did and asking why I did, so I kept saying I didn't. Then I asked where I ran them and he named places I was at. All of which I stopped for the stop light/signs. Then he goes, "Did you drop your girlfriend off in West Mankato?" and I said yes, but the bull alarm went off right there. There was no one around when I dropped her off, which either means someone was driving with their lights off, or someone who has something against me called it in. So then he goes, "What's your major malfunction, man? No, wait, I know what your problem is, you drive an Eagle Talon, your dad should've never even have bought you this car.", he only knows this cause my car is under my dad's name. He gave me a warning and told me I was on his "list". Then he called my dad and said that I was supposed to call him and get right home. So I called my dad and I denied it up and down, because... well... I didn't do it. So we started thinking of things that happened.
#1. The cop was profiling me because of my car and was following me.
#2. Someone I knew and was enemies with called it in.
Either way, it doesn't make sense. Whoever was "following me" didn't have their lights on. The cop obviously had something against my car. He shouldn't be harassing me for something I didn't do and he can't prove. I think the cop was following me, cause he just wanted to scare me. Because, if he saw me run even one stop light/sign, I should've been pulled over, and the person would've called that one in the first time I did it, not follow me to see if I run anymore. It just all doesn't add up.
We're going to call the police tomorrow to talk to the guy and the chief, because this is all bull and I'm not going to stand for it.
But what do you think I should do? |

it comes down to the fact that anonymous tips have to meet a two fold requirement of past accuracy and intimate knowledge of the individual and specifying what time, the location, etc...
a civilian means nothing. It was not a credible report and as far as it goes all it can do is raise suspicion level to the normal level they ALWAYS have, a social contact. They cant use it as any kind of evidence, or justification. Anonymous tips have way less validity than known informants, which have to have records and be on a known informans list.
The pulling you over was reasonable as far as traffic violators HAVE to be stopped to even talk to, so it wasnt an "arrest" in the typical sense. However, he was asking questions about YOU running the stop signs, not a citizen. Once the questions were directed towards you you labeling you as a primary suspect and were no longer general questions. You were now effectively under arrest due to the nature of the questioning. You could not leave. Traffic rules are different because situations are so weird, but the police officer had already disgnated you as a criminal. Innocent before proven guilty? ever heard that one? I hate small time cops, have no idea what their job is.
furthermore, the personal attacks showed his obvious bias in the situation and the complete lack of anything even remotely resembling evidence showed that this was more in the nature of a pre-textual stop than a real crime avoidance behavior. Pretextual means you pull someone over expecting to find a crime.
The whole thing was bull, he was abusing his power, and he had no jsutification for the things he did. Next time that starts happening ask him for his badge number and name. That situation is totally ed and I would definitely go to the chief of police for it because that is absolutely unconstitutional behavior. |

Man, that is teh balls...
It's situations like that where you know you've got a no-dick who just wants to play with the authority given to him for a few minutes...
It's probably because when he goes home at night he's got some bitch domineering wife who kicks his ass, and the only place he's got any authority at all anymore is when he's cot the cherries & berries whirling above his head... |

I don't degrade cops. I think they do a decent amount of work for society in assuring safety and deterance of a freedom of crime. While most people can have fun at work, socializing with customers and making friends with co-workers, cops just deal with 8 hours of talkers and law breakers 7 days a week. So im guessing that to have a little fun on the job is do exactly what you describe, take advantage of their position of authority, especially at the end of their shift. I'm guessing you just got caught by a cop who was on his " THIS JOB" round robin moment.
but i think the attitude extends to almost everyone, so its not just cops who put piss poor attitudes on the job. |

yep, people are people hehe
however, I dont think police officers should let themselves fall under same emotional traps others do. Its too important not to. its also why its worth talking to higher ups, because smart people tend to get promoted in there. |
