Evolutionary theories are pure speculation. Becuase evolutionary psychology is interested in human behaviour, theories are based on observatiuon of people today (as opposed to bodily evolution, where we can look at tangible evidence like fossils e.t.c.). Consider also the other influences on behaviour (culture e.t.c.). Just because our genes were there when we were born doesn't make them the ultimate influence of our behaviour.
I'm sure evolution does have an influence over our behaviour, but it's all too easy to overestimate the strength of that influence. |
Genes exert more influence than any environmental factor, while, what u say may be valid, perception and deception are what win mates, in the animal world and in the human world. You say the evolutionary aspect is pure speculation, if thats the case whats facts do you have?

I'm not out to prove that evolutionary psychology is wrong. But it's good to question theories, especially ones that tend to by assumed/accepted by default.
Think about it - we can't observe the behaviour of our ancestors can we? All we can do is observe the behaviour of people today and try to fit in a 'likely story' as to why we behave the way we do. Because of this, the evolutionary psychology research tends to be more theory based and less evidence based than some other psychological disciplines. It's a point that deserved further consideration in what was turning out to be a one-sided essentialist debate.
Of course, the social psychology is very theory-based too. No theory would be complete without it's criticisms. |
