Hello fellow TAs. Now that June is over we all find ourselves halfway through another year, which has been filled with fantastic releases from all our favorite DJs and producers. In order to avoid a problem that we had with last year’s TOTY voting I, with the blessings of the TA moderators, am starting the voting process that will give tracks from the first half of the year equal consideration as the tracks from the second half.
The search for our 2005 TOTY will go as follows:
1st Half of 2005
Everyone is instructed to vote for their top 10 tracks from the first half of this year. Make sure these tracks were released within this time period. If you are afraid of selecting something that was released in June, but you feel won’t receive the attention, thus votes, that it would say in the 2nd half of the year, vote for it anyways. You have plenty of votes and you can always vote for that borderline track again in the 2nd nomination period.
Per the Mods, nominations that have various remixes will be considered one song. For example, if someone votes for Hammer & Bennett - Language (Santiago Niño Dub Tech Mix) and someone else votes for Hammer & Bennett - Language (Original Mix) these tracks will be considered to be Hammer & Bennett - Lanuague.
Please clearly define your order of preference as these votes will be weighted to determine the most popular tracks. Please follow this example:
1 Artist – Song
2 Artist – Song
3 Artist – Song
4 Artist - Song
5 Artist – Song
6 Artist – Song
7 Artist – Song
8 Artist - Song
9 Artist - Song
10 Artist - Song
If you fail to clearly indicate your order of preference then it will be assumed that the first track is your first choice, the second track is your second, and so on and so forth.
The point system goes as follows:
1st selection = 10 points, 2nd = 9, 3rd = 8, 4th = 7, 5th = 6, 6th = 5, 7th = 4, 8th = 3, 9th = 2, and 10th = 1.
The 16 (sixteen) tracks with the most nomination points will represent the 1st half of 2005. They will be joined by the 16 2nd half nominations in the Final Polls.
Please vote only once. You can change your selections by editing your original post. This thread will remain open until mid-August. The 2nd half thread should open in December. |

vote for it in both halves. once there is a clear determination as to where the track belongs just remove the track from one of your halves and replace it with something else |

So what's the verdict of the counting of remixes. I think there needs to be a distinction between remixes of songs, but some remixes can be put together here is my solution from the other thread:
| quote: | I think that it should come down to the artist.
Example:
blank & jones - the perfect silence (original & club mix both by blank & jones)
blank & jones - the perfect silence (perry o'neil mix)
blank & jones - the perfect silence (martin roth mix)
blank & jones - the perfect silence (e-craig mix and dub)
These four should be separate because they are differen't artists, and the original and club mix done by b&j should be together cause it's the same artist. Get it?
So like these mixes should be separate:
niklas harding - butterfly effect (original)
niklas harding - butterfly effect (lucas and beltram remix)
niklas harding - butterfly effect (hydroid remix)
because they all sound different ofcourse, but more importantly, they are all done by differen't artists.
but these mixes should be put together:
perasma - swing to harmony (gabriel and dresden dub mix)
perasma - swing to harmony (gabriel and dresden vocal mix)
because they sound almost the same except one is more vocal, but again more importantly, they are done by the same artist.
ok?
once again..
These..
martin roth's hands on keane - this is the last time (martin roth dub remix)
martin roth's hands on keane - this is the last time (martin roth vocal remix)
should be put together.
and these..
luminary - my world (andy moor remix)
luminary - my world (arksun remix)
luminary - my world (hydroid remix)
luminary - my world (nikola gala remix)
should be separate. |
Maybe this would require too much work but I think it's the only fair way to go. Because I may vote for the Hydroid remix of My World, but I HATE all the other remixes (well mostly the Andy Moor one) and I definately don't want my vote to go towards them. |

So we should alter the voting strategy to fit your tastes and desires? Thats pretty hubristic. |

Your recommendation makes sense. Remixes by someone other than the artist will be considered a totally individual track. But for tracks that are minutely different like
| quote: |
perasma - swing to harmony (gabriel and dresden dub mix)
perasma - swing to harmony (gabriel and dresden vocal mix)
|
we will ask our fellow TAs (in a poll or in an MD thread) to decide on the points placement if we run into this problem in the actual voting |

I just think it's the fairest way to go. Especially to the artists. That last little bit was just a personal example. If you don't think it's a good way to go that's fine. But it's hardly a hubristic request.
And btw I don't even think you used hubrism in the right context. Hubrism refers to arrogance in actions not desires. It's often used in greek myths to describe a certain character that has gone to far with their desires not simply desired something.
Or can be used to describe the US's government actions as of late. :p |

| Will you be able to nominate less than 10 tracks? |

| I would suggest NOT including specific remixes. I think that if you nominate a track it should sitll be all inclusive of the remixes as well. |

If I was right in assuming you wanted the rules to change due to your desires, I think it can be considered acceptable, but I was stretching for lack of a word in quick thought.
I understand the purpose of doing this, but this could lead to some pretty unfavorable matchups, such as two or three mixes of the same song facing off against each other.
However, in retrospect, its not a bad idea. Depending on how things work out we may not see any duplicates, or we may see a glut of one song. I think its probably worth trying. |
