| Dance music as a whole will probably never get globally more popular than rock/hip-pop etc. Trance music is just a niche. |

It would be great for all of EDM to go mainstream, there would be more money invested in the music and therefore a better product would be developed. However, the genre would be watered down by an influx of producers trying to milk every new sound movement, as you see in rock. This itself has positive and negative aspects, but I truly believe on the whole it would be good for the genre to go mainstream.
That being said, I don't think it could happen. EDM, and especially trance is not very accessible. Imagine turning on the radio you get your commericial and then bam trance goes on. Its too much for people, and I find its too much for me too, even considering how much I love the music. The reason why there is so much emphasis placed on djs and mixed cds is that EDM is worlds better when mixed. Of course, you have your stand-out songs that you can listen to by themselves, but most of EDM really requires you to be in a certain mood and while the track is playing you are brought further into that mood. Then suddenly you have your commercial for local job offerings, typical excessive radio jargon, and all that garbage that goes on after every song comes on the radio. The mood is killed, and once this mood is crushed you are less enthusiastic about returning to that same place.
While radio isn't everything, it does mean a whole hell of a lot. Next, a key component of becomming mainstream is capturing the attention of the fickle teen market, who are less concerned about the music being played than the image that is attached to it. This is perhaps an even bigger problem for the genre. When people who don't listen to EDM, or are new to the genre think of an image of the music they usually have two in mind. First, the drugged out raver. For some people this might seem appealing, but for the majority it is not only not appealing, but a likely reason to be turned away from the EDM scene.
Next, the nerd making music behind his computer. This image will only amplify as the Ableton movement filters down the ranks of djs. Not only will people question why should I pay to see some guy fiddle around with his laptop, through ignorance of course, but they will see it as something they could never dream about. One of the greatest things about rock is how easy it seems for people to become rockstars. Thousands of jackasses a year buy guitars and practice 'Stairway' hours on end in hopes of becomming the next great thing. Rock is associated with the groupies of course, adding yet another one up on EDM. Lastly, although you can dj from your computer for virtually nothing, if you actually want to learn the craft, it is one of the most expensive hobbies a teen could undertake. So this 'dreaming factor' if you will is yet another reason it would be difficult for EDM to go mainstream, because relatively speaking, it does not allow the listener to dream of becomming the artist.
I would love for EDM to go mainstream, however I just don't see it happening. |

| I hope that trance music will not go mainstream... These days, trance music is as a special thing, and most of the people who listen to this music are the people who really understand it and appreciate it. And I think that this kind of attitude influences DJ (I hope) to produce high quality music. But when something goes mainstream, it means that bunch of the jerks without any skills will get into this music just only because they can get bunch of money out of it. Eventually, by going mainstream, trance music will loose it special thing and will just become some kind of pop music... Look what happened to rap music; just compare the rap scene these days with a rap scene during the rise of this style of music. |

| No form of trance is going to grow in my opinion, it has had its day and its phases and I don't really see any fresh productions coming through that set the world alight. Even the cheesy trance crap is on the decline where I am. |

| And why does it matter that trance becomes mainstream? The best stuff track-wise is not mainstream music and for me I doubt it ever will be. |

| Yes it will eventually. Rock seems to be on the decline and Rap has taken over, just look at TRL. And once Rap is on the decline....I hope country music doesn't become the new fad. |
