Ok. I've rendered a little sample here.
SAMPLE
From 0:00 to 0:07 the bass is mono, from 0:07 to 0:14 the bass is stereo :)
Personally I think that the 2nd part with stereo bass sounds better :rolleyes:
BTW, check out my lame kick :toothless ;) |

Hey. Honestly, I think the mono and stereo versions work well together. You could use one say at the beginning in the intro and then when u start adding , u can add some kind of precussion roll and then break out the bigger synths and move into the stereo field. Then switch back and forth as a transition. Dunno. Dont jsut think of it as black or white though. Thats a great patch and it sounds good in both mono and stereo, so dont think for a second you would ever have to decide between the two. Use both! :)

This just means that the mythical "always mono!:wtf:" theory is wrong ;) So the answer to the first question is: NO, you shoudn't make you bass mono :p |

don't you get the impression that liquid8 thinks a lot of accepted ways of doing things are wrong? the theory of evolution - how about that liquid8?
ok, the mono bass thing. if you have a stereo bass track where is the audio data located? yes, it's panned hard right and hard left. and the point of that would be? well there isn't one. you just end up using valuable stereo space that could be used better by other audio. if that's wrong then liquid8 you better get on to all of the recording studios that do it that way in mono and have done for good reason for many years.
how about motherhood and apple pie - that wrong too? |

About recordings studios. My brother is working in one ;) And if you didn't know, you don't need to leave free space for other elements. The bass is the lowest element frequency wise, so if you put some lead or pads or any other sound, its frequency will be higher than bass' so it wouldn't interfere with it ;) If you wanna make it sound clear, you better play with EQ rather than with stereo space, especially when it comes to bass.
About "motherhood and apple pie" - I can't answer, as I don't know anything about it :) |

| Stereo Bass or Stereo Kicks can jump the needle on vinyl. So that's why they should be mono in general. |

Thanks for the info everyone. I think Im gonna keep my bass in mono. If bass was supposed to be in stereo than why would a dedicated synth for bass like the bass-station be in mono only?
And when Im using other sources for my bass how do I keep them in mono? For instance, every other vst I have only opens up on a stereo track. The bass-station is the only one that lets me open it in mono. So how do I use the bass from my other vst's or hardware in mono?

Depends on which sequencer you're using. In Cubase you would route the stereo synth output to a mono group channel. In Logic - use the ES1. Or, you could when you come to do the mix proper - bounce the stereo bass track, throw away the right channel and just import the left one. |

Hey. In my opinion, as long as you used chorusing to get the stereo effect, you are in business. Dont expect that just because a synth doesnt come with a certain built in effect, that you cant add it in yourself. Notice how synths like the DX7 didnt come with any built in effects and listen how much better it sounds as FM7 with all the extra effects which include chorusing :).
