Some techno all sounds like one continual noise to me. Some breaks sound too bleepy bloopy for me. Same tired comments. I like the melodies of trance and the driving rhythms of house. Nick Warren GU is good but so is some trance sets by Jon O'Bir. I don't why it has to be black & white. I even liked some Carl Cox thrown in there sometimes. And I didn't say PVD at SS was that great, I review trying to be impartial. |
+1 to a lot of those comments.
Based on live performances, recorded sets, radio shows, and albums since NY at midnight, mine would be:
1. PvD (Summer stage was the worst of 4 sets I've seen him live at this year, and it was still mediocre, not bad)
2. Ferry Corsten
3. Jon O'Bir
4. James Zabiela (Utilities saved him, sooo much better than Alive)
5. Armin van Buuren (barely, too, ASOT has been waning in since episode 200, too many bad rock n' roll remixes like "Good Vibrations" at the wrong times).
Honorable mentions go to:
-Sasha (honestly, I didn't love the Fundacion album as much as Involver)
-Steve Porter (been missing too many live shows to make my top 5, otherwise he'd have made it)
-Evil Nine (love the Essential Mix and CD, missed them w/ The Crystal Method)
-Eddie Halliwell
Sorry to all the DJs that I haven't seen/heard enough to make the list (Desyn Masiello, Danny Howells, Carl Cox, the list goes on) |

1. Remy...
killed it both times at Spirit with Armin, and the man's productions this year were amazing.
2. James Holden...Spirit nights + Productions were amazing
3. Howells
4. Christopher Lawrence...never ever dissapoints when he makes it to town. His style is so much more fresh and banging than most of the euro trance djs who people sweat so much.
5. Noel Sanger...
destroyed Sullivan Room in June and his remix of "Close Enough" was my favorite trancier song of the year. |

I don't know what kind of confused crap they teach you in junior EDM-school down there in Philly, but if "*" means "anything" (as in all other aspects of online life) then it follows that AvB > AvB. AvB is better than AvB! Outrageous! Clearly this is nonsense, so your ridiculous claim falls flat. Give it another five years of EDM-education and you might see the light. Hehe.:D |

5 more years of EDM education will still leave me at trance. I have gone from techno to trance in a span of 10 years. Sure I like other like progressive and house but its not as fun to dance to in a club. I saw Sasha once and he kicked ass, I wont lie. But I still spent more then half the time just standing there listening to the music because... that is all you can do to progressive. |
Last i heard, jumping up and down with your hands in the air and everyone facing the frontstage was a concert and not a dance event.... Show me a trance party where this isnt the case.... |

5) Nic Fanciulli (loveeeee his funkiness on the decks!) :toothless
4) Ferry Corsten
3) Blank and Jones
2) Armin van Buuren
1) Paul van Dyk
It was hard to decide who was going to be No. 1 on my list. I had to contemplate between PvD and AvB because:
- AvB's weekly ASOT on www.di.fm simply blows my mind away. His experimental ways with his tracks and his track selection.. simply amazing.
- Shivers is forever spinning on my iPod.
- PvD is only the disc jockey that can send shivers down my spine while listening to his recorded live sets. Paul van Dyk - Live at Cream Amnesia, Ibiza (08.16.02) & Paul van Dyk - Live at Jahre Maximal (05.14.05) *both from the TA Live Set Page* are by far the MOST PLAYED Live Sets on my iPod. It's just the energy that Paul buils and brings, the sound of the fans cheering PAUL VAN DYK!! PAUL VAN DYK!! -god it makes me just wish I was there that night, there to cheer, there to experience..THAT MOMEMNT.
- I love the way Paul builds momentum in the song.. then drops a little breakbeat, it's like a tease I can say? and then, full intense energy after.
- Armin has left quite a few memories with me. I remember back in Roxy... 04? I believe 04.. he dropped Armin van Buuren - Burned with Desire (Rising Star Mix) and at that time, I was SO IN LOVE WITH THAT SONG... god I was trip-happy.
- Armin's set(s) gives a really, blissful, uplifting, heavenly vibe, especially with the vocal tracks.. and I love uplifting.. melodic sets..
- Paul's set(s) gives a really, blissful, uplifting, - energetic vibe.
I love energetic sets.. sets with a bit of uplifting, melodic feel, but yet I prefer a bit of euro-hardness and PvD seems to be the one who is onkey with that. So I guess PvD wins my heart again this year :tongue2 |
