^^^If you're a geek you have a gmail account. If you're an UBER Geek you use Jabber! :p
Hopefully this will change as Google steals marketshare from the other major players (MSN/ICQ/AIM/YAHOO!). |

Simply put, Jabber is an open standard recognized by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) way of doing messaging. Its most popular use is in IM communications. In addition to being open, It is designed in a way (using the power of XML namespaces) to be extensible -- anyone can build custom functionality on top of the core protocols; to maintain interoperability between clients (ie: it will be easy to add offline messages functionality without messing other people who might not use that client). It can be used for other things other than IM like network management, content syndication, collaboration tools, file sharing, gaming, remote systems monitoring, etc.
In any case, it's a Good Thing (tm). For example, in the case of Google Talk, It allows you to use any other client that supports jabber (Trillian Pro, GAIM, Exodus, Miranda, etc) in case you don't like how Google Talk works. This allows you to free yourself from being locked-in into one piece of software/platform.

Remember the days back when Prodigy users couldn't email AOL users, and you coudln't email either from a university "internet email"
That is where we are now with IM.
Imagine if back then someone was whacky enough to make an email client which required an account from every major provider in order to email your friends, rather than simply everyone moving to the official smtp and mime standards (Part of the technology allowing e-mail now).
That is where we are now with IM.
Google having an IM service should give the critical mass necessary to jabber for other IM services to investigate, and finally use it (at least bridged).
I yearn for the day when I have only 1 IM ID. People who like yahoo can use their client and YIM ID, people who run their own jabber server can use whatever client they want, etc. Hell, they can even run propriatary video conferencing/etc which require their own software for all I care as long as I can do simple messaging with anyone on any service.
