I remember the looting in Hurricane Andrew pretty well, my parents used to have a store and I remember going there after the storm to check out what happened to our store and I saw a whole bunch of black people running around the stores looting, and some hispanics at other locations. On TV they showed mainly the blacks and some hispanics(mainly mexicans),and the occasional redneck as well.
Problem is in Homestead thats the kinda people that mainly lived on the poor side of my town,so its probably the same situation in the gulf coast now, but I guess they have a higher population of blacks, which I guess are mostly on the poor side,so what Im sayin is that the media never showed any kind racism in Andrews case, just the reality of the situation, and maybe same applys to Katrinas aftermath looting.
But lol at these photos description. Obviously these are states known for racism in the past and I can totally see the media playing some tricks too. |

Yahoo doesn't write the captions. The news organizations do, in this case the AP and AFP. |

Well then the AP or AFP who sent is a racist idiot and yahoo should of noticed and if not then they don't care about what they show because maybe their jobs are to get paid to show what ap and AFP send |

I personally didn't see any white folks looting in the media.
Maybe that's because they weren't. Have you ever considered that instead of criticizing the media? The area is predominantly black. Last time I checked, gangs were roving around and police and National Guard are being diverted from live saving duties to thug arresting duties because they are getting out of control. NOt surprising at all in New Orleans, a city which probably has near 50% of its people living at the poverty level to begin with, and, as a matter of fact, they are all living at the poverty level at the moment.

Maybe people shouldn't be so ing PC. You know what the end result of that kind of is? some 32 year old dude gets fired and has to tell his wife why hes home early that day.
People need to get off their high ing horses and realize everyone s up just like you.
edit: and what do you do when you find out the editor is black? are you assuming this is a white person? |

I dunno. What I do know is that black and white coffins are starting to pop up. Remember, they bury folks above ground in New Orleans and the whole place is underwater...

| Why even make these comparisons? It just makes a bad situation worse. |

No, they don't have the authority to change the captions. They subscribe to the news wires so they post what is sent to them. How would you feel if I were distributing a story you had written and I changed it to how I wanted it? I'm not justifying the fact that a black man was "looting" while a white man was "finding," I'm just saying I think it is ridiculous how people jump to conclusions by saying Yahoo News is racist. |
