He wasn't even acknowledging the crowd. :( |
digweed never acknowledges the crowd. at least not any time i've ever seen him. my mission was to see him smile at least once last night! i've actually never seen him joke around so much before though...climbing up to the dj booth when danny was spinning like some lunatic, duct taping danny's back, doing the "wave" in the dj booth. wierd.
anyways, we arrived around 1 am, and danny was playing his signature deep groovy warm-up house, which i, for one, loved. great build into the rest of the set, he just lost me for about an hour there (probably around 4 or so) playing that bang bang hard techno . i could have handled it if it wasn't so monotonous. anyways, one hour to not like isn't that bad! the last two hours were phenomenal - proper funky danny sound. wasn't the best i've heard from him, but still good. he said he wasn't very happy with it, but whatever! a so-so danny set is still better than a lot of other djs. the only track i for sure know the name of that he played is: Andry Nalin and Gregor Wagner - Piano Track
then digweed came on and i didn't really like the beginning of HIS set, too dark and stompy, but that didn't last for too long and the rest was really good. was very cool seeing them back to back at the end, once danny was prodded out of the chair that he was slumped in, in the corner of the dj booth. haha. i haven't seen him that messy since dec 2003 in the koolhaus here in toronto. he even apologized to me for "getting so out of control" when i was saying goodbye. i was like "why are you apologizing to ME? i thought it was cute." ;)
we stayed till the end at around 12:30 and i feel like i've been chewed up and spat out due to dancing on a concrete floor for 11 hours in crappy trainers.
i get to see him next week in new york city! yeah!!!!
ps. what is up with the freakshow there? there is no need to be lifting people up in the air. i know you're ed up, but god, when is that ever a good idea? maybe i don't understand because i've never felt the urge to look like a complete tit in front of a roomful of people. |

Wow! What a night/morning!!!
Finally got to meet some TA's (Tag, Jesteraver, & one other whose name escapes me at present), which got our night off to a good start!
Arrived at about 2:00 or so.. wasn't really feeling Howell's track selection at that time, but it definitely got better as the set went on! The damn place was so packed there wasn't really any room to dance on the floor, so my g/f and our two friends spent the majority of the time upstairs on the balcony. God bless the water-girl up there.;)
A little after 6 or so Diggers came on, and his sets was one of the best I've heard from him thus far (my first time seeing him live). But what was up with the buildup, buildup, buildup, transition? It seemed to me that his set was lacking the climactic element that would've made it utterly untouchable. And I agree about the whole lack-of-crowd-recognition-thing, it definitely takes away from the overall experience. Started dancing at about 4, up there on the balcony, and didn't quit until about 12:40 or so, the very very end... which seemed to never come as the man dropped encore after encore. Torture on the legs! And here's a nice lil' bit you sadistic s might enjoy; I actually danced so hard that I had to hobble back to our car, two hernias in tow, and a strangulated nut to boot. A ty reward for 9 hours worth of dancing! (Note: the whole 'strangulated nut' thing actually helped us cut like 1000 cars at the border en route to home, hehehe).
Overall the night was quite memorable, my only complaints being the lack of dancefloor space and inept house 'substances' (which we pretty much expect by now). And where were all the trees???
Hope everyone who attended had as much fun as I did, I'll see y'all in like 3 months after this surgery is finished with...

so !
Here is my time for the Review
Got in the aria around 3h and there was NO line-up outside which was pretty nice. Danny Howells was dropping some pretty ing nice beats, really interestin music. He played half an hour of ED UP TWISTED ACID HOUSE !!! I COULDN'T HAVE BEEN HAPPIER THAN WHEN HE DROPPED ETIENNE DE CRECY'S OVERNET !! It went exactly that way for about 2 hours and then he became boring for an hour, it was techy, but not hard enough to make tech lover like it, but too hard for people who don't like techno, and it was not funky enough to get the people really into it. The last hour of his set was just PURE BLISSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS really ing good !
Digweed came on, and demonstrated how can a world renouned dj can miss completly his set. There was NO flow to his set, one prog tune, one electro tune, one tech-house tune. Sure it was good, but it was nowhere near what Digweed can do. It is as if digweed was playing with the record box of someone else. I think digweed is trying to follow the new trend, whereas before he was MAKING the trends. Don't get me wrong, it was a ing nice set, but his wasn't digweed !!
I'm relly happy to have met many people which i don't quite remember but anyway, who cares, i'm the one important who you all have to remember, why would I remember you all !!
lol
P.s. Hi epi, taha and marcus !

good times all around! Pretty cracked out right now, I have completely screwed up my sleep schedule having slept all day since noon, so now I'm an insomniac.
ACtually showed up to the party pretty late, round 5am, where we proceeded to walk in, through security in less than 30 seconds thank goodness. Was the line worse round 2-3? I was expecting a lot worse, but was pleasantly surprised!
Got in to hear Howell's last hour or so. I really had no idea what to expect from the guy having never seen him before and having gone on a download frenzy beforehand to get a feel for his stuff. But the stuff I had d/led was nothing like I was hearing (couple live sets, his GU discs etc). Anyhow was a good start to the night, chilled out on the couches in the lounge cuz the dancefloor was absolutely rammed!
Like some of the others had mentioned, we made our way to the balcony which was an oasis from the crammed dancefloor downstairs. Diggers came on and the night just went up from there! The crowd started thinning out round 9 I'd say, so finally made our way down to the dancefloor until complete exhaustion took over and i bounced round 10:45... definitely satisfied to be back partying in MTL after a brief hiatus! Also, was quite impressed by the girl:guy ratio! So used to the techno/trancier nights where it's sausage fest galore. Guess that's what a housier/prog night will do! :D
Only a couple songs I can remember that stuck out: Eric Prydz-Knockout and Full Blown-Some Kinda Freak (remix?). Ran into Wisnia, quite a contrast from Amnesia no?? What happened to the rest of the IBiza crew?!
prochaine station: IM+ferry! |

...and are the rumors true? was this wonderful night recorded?

The first 4 hours of Howell's set was so slow for me... I pretty much fell a sleep emotionally and mentally to it... the last 2 hours leading to Digweed it got better but wtv... by 6am I was getting fustrated listening to him and I was dieing for Digweed to get on.
Digweed set was amazing... I cant remember what his set sounded from Cream last year, so cant compare it to that. I listened to some of his comps, from back in 2000 and some of his sets like from Global Gathering... GG was completely different then what he dropped at Aria I found, or I was extremely tired. I totally enjoyed Digweed. To bad he was drinking.
For me Digweed still is way better then Howell's.
I've always been a huge Digweed fan... Howell's is going to have to work extra ing hard to make me a fan of his.
Plus I listen to Howell's, GU Miami again... CD.1 so boring I find... the second CD is way much nicer... but I kept talking to ppl that liked CD1 more then the second one and they were enjoying Howell's more.
My mind was set only for Digweed... another reason I didnt care for Howell's that much either. |
