'Super' PC but stuttering real fast in FL
View this Thread in Original format

1) I have AMD 64 3000+ with 512 mb ram and on board sound card
2) i have fl studio
3) i have buffer size maximized
4) no programs in the background running
5) it starts stuttering and having problems after 4/5 simultaneous vst's (not even z3ta but v-stations)
6) what is the problem? i want to make complex tracks but i cant! Is it the on board sound card? Is it FL Studio??

ps I have tried Asio4all but it got worse (uber-stuttering)

will it improve using ableton live?
will it improve buying a new sound card (guess not)?
will it improve throwing my pc out the window?

what the hell is wrong?

5 v-stations is not much at all...
I think a new sound card should improve a lot. maybe also have a look at the CPU usage meter how it is doing. I think the meter should be fine. And if it is it is quite probably your soundcard giving you trouble.

1. your cpu aint fast. buy faster or overclock it
2. 526 ram aint mutch..buy more
3. todays on board soundchips are quality.. difference between motherboard soundchip and maudio firewire audiophile is only little
Timothy
Buy a soundcard that has Asio 2 drivers.

I'd say your computer isn't fast enough, upgrade it and buy more ram as said above.
I'm planning to buy a new Athlon X2 4400+ with 1gb ram and I still think it won't be able to run my projects smoothly (I use FLS too).

WTF I really don't know what you people are talking about, I can run 8-9 v-stations on my AMD Athlon xp 2500+. If it really is his CPU speed he really is doing something wrong imo.

disagree on point #1 it should be enough for at least the double amount of v-stations.
2. yup
3. haven't heard any bigger crap than that that last couple of months. On board soundchips are crap, screwed dynamics and the strangest frequency response you can imagine. Every on board card is useless for making serious productions.

Imho your best bet is to buy a decent soundcard first and maybe some 512 extra ram.

Wow, it's hard to believe the amount of bad advice getting passed around lately.

That CPU is *plenty*. You definitely don't need to upgrade. 512 MB of RAM is questionable for producing, but that's not going to effect VST performance unless you have 30 instruments loaded.

Your onboard sound card *may* suck, but you need to give us details on the mobo/sound chip.

Have you actually set up FL to use ASIO, or is it still set to using DirectSound?

Are you checking your CPU, to see if it is in fact CPU overload or if it is just a problem with the sound driver? If it's stuttering but you're CPU is at 20%, then you may just need to update your sound drivers and/or set different options in FL.

If you've got one of those mobos with 500 different integrated devices, it could also be an IRQ sharing problem. If there's any hardware inside your PC that you aren't using and don't plan on using for a while, disable it.

That should get you started. Let us know how you make out.

yeah, new soundcard.. psi is the best imo, but im prolly gonna get flamed for saying it.. and perhaps even 512+ of ram...

Storyteller do u know what u talking about, my onboard sound is doing it for me,i guess if i reach a level of "know how" instead of "how to" i would buy a better sound card for now im ok with my onboard. :)

mysticalninja
why do ppl turn buffer size all the way? doesnt that cause lag? i turn my buffer size as far down as i can without getting cracks in the sound, that way i get the lowest possible latency.
Storyteller
yes but not so good sound cards tend to crackle a lot faster ;) that is way people with on board soundcards have to have a large buffer size most of the times.
