Literally I was punched in the face - BUT we stopped a Drunk Driver

Talk about a crazy set of events that just occurred.

My friend Jeff and I were walking out of my apartment to go out for a rock and roll night @ the Bovine. We had literally just crossed the street when we saw this guy driving who seemed a little dazes and confused. He pulled into the middle of the intersection towards the end of the block. The right hand side of his vehicle was all busted up. The driver then got out of his vehicle, left it running with his door open. He walked over to the damaged area and proceeded to try and pull it out. We continue to walk not really sure what is going on and then my buddy says that guy is drunk. I immediately ran over to the drivers side of the vehicle and slammed the door shut so he could not get back in. Jeff came over to assist me at stopping this guy from getting back inside and driving away. While I am in front of him and blocking the door another by stander pulls out the keys. The driver did not see this happen. Then I walked away from the vehicle. By this time people are everywhere checking out the situation. I walked over to the passengers side to talk with the guy who took the keys out. While everyone was distracting the driver he slipped to the keys to me. I then slipped them in my pocket. Again the driver was completely oblivious to the whole situation. He tried to get back in and start the car but no keys were there. He started freaking out. I called the cops and so did others. The guy then starts trying to pick fights with everyone. Would you believe when I am not looking he sucker punches me in the face. When he goes to take more punches people have started moving in to block his hits. He continues on his little rampage and tries to hit and kick others. Then I see this huge ass dood and I walk over to his area. He says: “you are o.k. here he ain’t getting past me.” By the size of this guy I felt extremely comfortable with him as my body guard. The driver then proceeds to try and come towards me again. THIS time however the BIG dood stops him from hitting and knocks him flat on his ass. The cops arrive on scene, driver is on his ass and I hand the keys over to the cops. The cops take statements and EMS checks me out. I was told I have to go see my family doctor today too. My jaw and neck is killing me but no sign of bruising on my face. Wow – holy crap…this is the second time this has happened to me in two years. The last time though I was lucky enough that the driver of the vehicle was soooooooooooo intoxicated that he could not even walk.

Wow Penny....glad you weren't hurt more then you were.

You and all of the people involved did a good thing stepping up because who knows who he could have hurt if he had gotten back into his car.

Glad you are ok *hugs*

Hopefully he was charged with impaired driving, leaving the scene of an accident (I HOPE the cops realized this), and assault. You did a great thing Penny, took one for the team ;). Please push forward with your assault charge, as sad as it may be, his drunk driving charges won't have much in terms of punishment.

The 1 thing I noticed when I moved to Canada, was how cautious Canadian's are of drunken driving (ie- they are more likely not to drink & drive in comparison to us Americans). Funny thing is, in 6 yrs, I have only ever seen 1 RIDE program, and hardly any cops on the roads at all, which is why I don't see the 'deterrant' factor like we did back home. My uncle was recently hit by a drunk driver, who'd already had like 20+ drunk driving incidents on his record. Basically, they get less than a slap on the wrist, despite all the convictions, lack of insurance, license or whatev. They still can get in a car and drive. Even if they cause death during a drunk driving situation, they get 2 yrs max here. The irony is in the US, the penalties are MUCH stiffer, charges of 'vehicular manslaughter', and long jail time, yet we were less concerned (maybe the attitudes have changed since I left, I dunno). And if u drove drunk multiple times, u would be sitting a long time in a cell.

well, i guess it TO it's hard to set up these RIDE programs in terms of traffic. the biggest deterrant is the possibility of killing someone or yourself. in timmins on the other hand, there was a RIDE program set up somewhere every week or two. easy to check all the people getting back from "the bar".

Good work!

Additionally, you have a nice little law suit out of it. You may even be able to make a claim for "Accident Benefits" from your auto insurer for any physio you may need (AB covers med/rehab/wage loss for any incident resulting from the use or operation of an automobile... trying to stop a drunk driver would likely qualify).

Many years back I was following a guy who looked to be drunk on the 401 WB toward Kitchener.... I called the police to report this... they told me to follow him so I did.... off the highway onto King street in Kitchener... followed for about 15 minutes.... guy was swerving all over the place and ridding the breaks. We got in front of Kitchener city hall (busy area usually has lots of people on the street) and 5 cop cars decend on him pulling him over right in front of the main square. One cop tells me to pull up to the next street and wait there. A few minutes later the cop comes over to me and says "well, he isn't drunk but his pants were down and he had a passenger seat full of pornography. Thanks for calling us."
