I can appreciate everybody's positive attitude , but the event was horrible. Needless to say Oakie will never play with these organizers again, obviously he was pissed at the sound quality, at the fact the crowd was kinda blah, because music lacked bass (due to sound problems), and the annoying announcer who kept interrupting great buildups with his "are you feeling it" and the naked chicks who I think Oakie wasnt digging as well. Anyways, the only positive thing I can say is Oakie had great tunes, I didnt really care for Chemical Brothers, just not my cup of tea although I heard people really enjoyed... Tenaglia in the tent was pretty good, the crowd was digging it, although it was hot as hell, I felt like a tomato growing up in a greenhouse...

OK all, here's my take:
Best sets of the night: Chemical Brothers & Morillo (Danny Tenaglia a close runner up). Hands down, they both showed why they should habve been the ones to close this festival out. The energy coming from both sets was awesome.
Biggest Dissapointment: Timo Mass - Sound problems on the main stage cut his set in half and then when it finally did get going, it sounded really weak OR Mylo, when after Timo the stage crew couldn't get the juice working for his PA while 'Mr. Ultra' pawned the crows.
Biggest 'my set got trashed thanks to the earlier mishaps': Oakenfold - Honestly, I was hoping he wasn't going to do a 'greatest hits' type thing that he did (He dropped PLENTY of late 90's favs - Greece 2000, Universal Nation, Viola), but flaws in the sound system thanks to all the earlier mishaps kept his set from being all that it could have been. The speakers were so blown and distorted that anytime he tried to work the crowd and turn the volume up, at the peak of the track, the sound would become so muddy that he had to turn the music back down to make things listenable again. Otherwise, had he dropped a set like this at Crobar or Spirit, he would have torn the place up. At least, being the professional he was, he carried on, made the best of it and didn't walk off early.
If you stayed in the Ultra tent all night (Cue, Tenaglia, Morillo), I'm sure your perception on the night was considerable different vs. had you been walking around to the different areas. The Ultra tent WAS where the real action was going on. Needless to say, things here got insanely hot. Morillo also dropped plenty of plugs for Pacha NY, to open in the old Sound Factory this fall.
Overall, this event had some serious problems that hopefully Ultra can work out its next time around, but I still had a good time. However, next time I recommend coming back with a bigger, longer festival perhaps at a different location (Randalls Island?) with better organization - anyone in the Ultra tent who wanted to use concessions or the portapots had to walk ALL THE WAY back across the festival! |

| Morillo and Teneglia=2 new yorkers=recipe for success, they both kicked ass. (period) How abou some fuk!!! ventilation in the tents, i know it has to be soundproof, but they could have left the whole backside open without interupting the main stage. Put some holes in the top, something, 120 degrees in there, by the way danny and eric could have pretty much handled the main stage, no need for them to be couped up in a tent. Nice to see a big latino crowd for house music, teneglia and morillo were really into it, danny was having a good as time like it was arc, he was movin and shakin to morillo, strong opening set by CUE, never heard of him before, good job. Now to the disaster ,main stage, i was embarresed for ultra, because they have 2 of the greatest talents in our scene, mmas and oakenfold, and they could not get the soundsystem together, oakenfold was visibly annoyed. When paul dropped traffic(tiesto) the crowd went nuts, i know many of us on this board are not big fans of him or his attitude, and his music, but lets give him credit he tried really hard and gave a good set, despite the circumstances. I was glad they sold out, beer was priced reasonbly, and sold like nuts, they had to send people to stores to get more, they made tons of moolah, they'll do this again, but can they fix the problems. Stop plugging the afterparty so much when i paid $65 for this show. |

well the reason why ultra had alot of technical problems was because the stage manager got fired earlier that day and they suspended the technical director (which has been there 18 years) and that is why nobody knew what to do or how to get things done right. Timo Maas played 3 tracks, then was told he had 2 minutes left so he just grabbed his headphones and left real pissed. Then Mylo was trying to get things going but things ed up and they only played 1 track and that was it. Oakey was amazing and i knew he would be. Greece 200 - 3 Drives on a vinyl was phenomenal!!!! he played a really good set but the soundsystem was as low as possible, it was absolute . during his set i noticed that Tara Reid was there and i just found that pretty cool that celebrities come to this kinda .
i left shortly after oakey's set to go see the one and only ERICK MORILLO!!!!!!! wow did he in own me :eyes: :eyes: i can't believe how energy packed his set was and every track was on point. Tara Reid was up there with him dancing the whole time, it was awesome. It was hot as in there and everybody was sweating like crazy but it just made the vibe so much better.
Highlight's of his set:
Eurythmics - Sweet Dreams (??? Mix)
Red Carpet - Alright (Brad Carter Remix)
Phillippe B - Can u Feel it
Mad 8 - Work That
San Francisco - Tainted Love (??? Mix)
Gadjo - So Many Times

i love morillo, he is such an entertainer, i can't wait til pacha opens up in a month or 2 :D
and BTW i caught oakey walking to see erick morillo so i got a nice pic with him which was cool.
well overall i was a little disappointed because it was so disorganized, and that stupid ass dude that always interrupts everybody's set is annoying as hell!
it was then off to the after party at Crobar....
got there at around 1 to find a huge DJ booth and it took me by surprise, i don't really like it because its so high up that u can't even see the DJ. but whatever i still had a great time. And there was some cool ass lasers and it just looked like a totally different club. I have no idea who opened for Timo or where Mylo played but it would have been nice to see him spin. But anyway.... it was the first time i actually saw Timo do a full set and i was pretty impressed. he played rather mellow tracks from 1-2 but picked it up nicely from 2-3:15. i can't ID most of the tracks he played but i know he played
Phillippe B - Can u Feel it
Audio Bullies - Bang Bang (??? Mix)
Timo Maas - Pictures (??? Mix)
Little Danny Tenaglia then jumped on the decks at about 3:30 and played a really hot set for the hour that i stayed. Him and Timo Maas tag teamed for a little bit, i guess he felt bad for him since his set at ultra got cut off. I had never seen Danny T and i gotta say he is pretty damn good. He brought like 7 record boxes with him since he was spinning a 9 hour set that is supposively going til 5PM (which is really hard to believe but who knows)... I was looking around and i saw that P Diddy was chilling in VIP so i tried getting a pic of him but it was hard because its so dark in there. But i did tap him on the shoulder and said wut up when he left :p
anyway i left at 4:30 because i had work early and i was tired as hell from jumpin around the whole night :D
P.S: got lots of pics coming later today ;) |

seriously i pretty much went to this event to see Mylo and CB. I am so pissed that I wasted that much money. the Chemical Brothers were totally great and I had the best time seeing them, but it does not make up at ALL for the amount of money I paid to get into this place.
Ultra should just stay in Miami! |
