I wanna know if I am the only one who has this same feeling.....
When i like a track....(for example i will use Delerium - Silence Tiesto Mix)....and i have been listening to it for like 5 months and LOVE it, and at the same time when i play this same track to my friends or other people who are NOT into trance they say thats crappy music or they just laugh at it......
But the minute it comes on the RADIO, these same critics who laughed and made fun of this track, NOW love it and think they KNOW everything about the trance scene because the song became popular and is now played on the radio or in a cheesy club.....i guees they jump on the "band wagon" so to speak....
I personally think the radio is good for the artist who brings a track out because of the money they get...but for the people like us -"trancaddicts"- i think it ruins the PERSONAL attachment to the track we have liked for soooooo long before it became mainstream....i dont mean that when it is played on the radio that i begin to HATE it, but instead that it looses its personal emotion......
I guess i am basically speaking of American radio cus i cant speak for other places...but American kids are always so quick to like a track if its played OVER AND OVER AND OVER again...and would NEVER like it if it was not broadcasted EVERYWHERE......
I like tracks more when they are not known to people outside the trance scene...because once they are known by the MASS , they get stripped of all the deepness that they once showered US with.....i am sure this is kind of a selfish thing for me to say but its true...for instance iw as playing Rank 1 - Airwave yesterday while pumping gas into my car..and some kids who looked like they are more into RAP then anything else where like i love that song the they actually say to me..."that song is the bomb, it just came out"....LOL see what i mean..they said IT JUST CAME OUT...they dont even know who Rank 1 is or that Airwave has been around longer then there precious "Eminem CD"....
Maybe i am ALONE with this feeling....i just like it better when the only people who KNOW the tracks i play are the same people who APPRECIATE the tracks and dont like them cus they are popular but instead because they give them a feeling inside that cant be described....sorry for the long post...just venting :( |

I highly have to agree with him on this...
I hate to say it guys, but I am starting to lean more and more towards the "radio is bad" idea... atleast here in the U.S....
Radio to me, is one of the top 3 "corruptors" of the music industry, once again, atleast in the U.S.... Here in Houston, the track "Darude - Sandstorm" (which we know came out years ago, but only came out about 6 months ago here) was literally killed by overplay.... its burnt out completely now... was a great track, I enjoyed it......... I ofcourse enjoyed it, a year before it even touched the airwaves of Houston...Also, better off alone... that one is absolutely dead now.... fair tracks, just destroyed...but now we got all these people running around thinking they know electronic. Nothing more entertaining than having a mainstreamer try to question my knowledge in electronic.... I could go on for hours about this, literally....but you all know my point.
Take it from an American TA... do what you can to keep this from reaching mainstream... seriously... as an American (half Greek ;)), I've never seen a music industry turn so disgusting, shallow, and sick..... keep this underground.....
Here is a reply I put to another post with a similar topic...
"Ok, I didn't read all of the posts, but I read some of them....
Look at it this way guys... Who cares if no one knows what it is.... Honestly, it doesn't really matter.. Personally, I like it better that way... it keeps us unique... and prevents the evil of mainstream corruption. Look at the world of mainstream. Corrupted by money, popularity, fame, etc. Its terrible, and sickening... Lets keep this "underground", lets keep it where its at now.... It will be devastating for this to become as popular as you see on American MTV.
We are unique.. We've found a type of music, not too many know of.... kinda like a treasure... lets keep it to ourselves... once everyone starts getting a hold of it, it starts to things up.......
If someone doesn't know what "trance" is, thats their loss...really...
If you want to spread the music, go ahead.... but you really shouldn't get upset if someone doesn't know what it is....once again, its their loss, and their ignorance is bliss...."
KEEP THIS UNDERGROUND, OR ATLEAST, FOR S SAKE, KEEP IT AWAY FROM THE U.S. lol seriously.... |

| If a song is good, then it is good. It doesn't matter how old the song is or who knew about it first. It also doesn't matter if it gets airplay or not. Art is art. Being an elitist and saying that we tranceaddicts are better and enjoy the songs more because we know more about them and herd them a long time before the average listener does not mean anything. We don't need to be stuck up about it. |

As much as I would like to agree - well, I do agree to an extent - I have to disagree. Music in general only continues to be produced because the artists make money. To make money they need to be heard by everyone, not only a select group of people because we cannot support the entire trance industry by ourselves. There will always be those en "joans" going out to buy the latest cd that has that sweet single they just heard on the radio, but it promotes the producer, what harm does that do? It has to be that way. I hate the people who generalize and stereotype as much a all of you do, I hate it when people judge me for the type of music I like, I hate it when people say, "oh, I heard that new PvD song the other day on MTV2." ITS NOT A IN NEW SONG! So there are always gonna be people that just piss you off and you want them to stay away from that something that is so close to your heart, but at the same time, you, me, we all at one time were newbie trance fans. Now we are all part of this group and accepted as trancEaddicts reguardless of ANYTHING. Everyone knows that everyone else listens to and enjoys trance. We cant keep our music from people because it wont spread and then less trance music will be made and soon enough, the entire earth will spin off its rotational axis and hurdle into space. WHAT NOW?
So theres my two cents... I agree and disagree, see how that works??
Hate those paradoxial situations.. Does that sentence work???

just remembered some more I wanted to add...
I want to keep trance underground sometimes and I know some of you share that opinion. Sometimes though, I want to have more people to actually talk about it with and listen to it with and all that . Sorta like a trancEaddict forum but in real life at home with my friends. See my point, I need it to expand even if i dont want it to all the time.

I have been in the rave scene for about 2 years, and for me it's the scene that I want to keep underground (away from mainstream corruption)... But as far as the music goes, I would like as many people as possible to discover this great music that we have been fortunate enough to discover. We shouldn't persecute the ignorant... They just don't know any better. I, for one, remember what it was like for me when I first started listening to electronica. I had no clue about DJs or mixed CDs... So, when I bought Oakenfold's Tranceport, on a friends suggestion, I didn't really like it that much at first cuz I wasn't familiar with the concept of a mixed CD and the music seemed to drag on for so long, cuz I was obviously used to the short 3 minute songs heard on the radio that jump right to the chorus.
Now that I've discovered this great world of electronic music and the rave scene, I NEVER listen to the radio anymore, and I poke fun at people who do, but I can't totally shun them, cuz unfortunately they just don't know any better. It's our job to educate them.
What really sickens me is the whole American Hip-Hop culture... I mean, I doubt half these kids would be listening to so much Hip-Hop if they didn't hear it night and day on the radio, TV and in the clubs... Not that I mind all Hip-Hop, some of it is pretty good, but it's really not that diverse a genre to be played out as much as it is... and I just hate how commercial it's become. It's all about money for the record industry and big businesses...
Anyways, it's almost 3pm here and I'm really hungry cuz I haven't eaten yet, so I'm gonna end this mini-rant right here.

I got no problem whatsoever with a track's popularity as long as it's not made to order (and I may like it even then). I still view Sandstorm as a highly original and catchy tune that stood up extremely well to repeated hearings. It takes a lot of effort for anyone to really begin appreciating any kind of art (cheese got everyone here into trance in the first place, remember?) and a truly great artist to create something which experts and novices alike can admire.
A scene's popularity is a slightly different matter. Air-time helps the scene grow and that would give you, for example, more choices of clubs and more popular DJs visiting where you live. Too many jump on the bandwagon and it gets overcrowded at some point, tho.

Personally I reckon it's good that a song gets on the radio or even MTV etc ... it makes money for the artist and that keeps the scene alive.
The trouble with keeping the trance scene underground is that most of us serious TA's don't actually BUY the records (unless we're bedroom DJs) cos they mainly come out on vinyl first. So we download them ... no money for the artists there ... and the club DJ's don't make that much money for the artists either ... so a song either needs to get on the radio or get on a mix CD if it's going to be an earner. I say get as much trance on the radio as you can, sell those Ministry of Sound trance compilations to the punters, take the money off those MTV watching suckers, let the producers and DJs get some money! At the end of the day who cares whether a bunch of posers and bandwagon jumpers are listening to the same song as me ... either it's a good song and it moves me, or it isn't ... that's all I'm interested in. |

it's all about trends, at least 80% of people in North America like to follow them. They go for what it tredny these days. Radio has become one of the ways to communicate music trends to ppl!

I agree totally, now Delerium - Silence (Tiësto Radio Edit) is getting canned on my local radio station and ppl think:
'oh this new song is great, reminds me a bit of that, erm, whatcha call it, y'know it was released last summer with the vid of those people tied 2gether having a run.' Aargh, these ppl do my head in.
Latest example is Push - The Legacy.
Also, the supposed new trance tune out at the moment is:
DJ Alligator - Whistle Song
Just download the radio edit off AG and laugh yourself silly :) |

Damn, this tune SUCKS!!! It's not exactly new, but was very popular a couple of years ago. Tunes like this give trance a bad reputation. One thing I don't understand is why garbage like this gets more popular than great tunes like Gouryella. I cannot possibly understand what sort of people who would like such a song (Whistle Song, not Gouryella, LOL).
 |

That is by far the worst idea I have ever heard... Ever heard the phrase "its all about the music"?
"Personally I reckon it's good that a song gets on the radio or even MTV etc ... it makes money for the artist and that keeps the scene alive...." you gotta be ing kidding me....
Trust me buddy, money and publicity isnt what is keeping the scene alive..... |
