what exactly r u trying to do? device manager is not going to recognize the modem if u connect via ethernet adapter.
hook the coaxial cable to ur modem.. connect ethernet cable from modem to computer.. turn on the modem.. then ur comp.. go to network connection and enable lan |

Get a router, which will act as a hardware firewall.
I have my cable modem connected to the WAN port of my wired router (w/4-port switch). My computer's onboard LAN is connected to one of the LAN ports on the router. No software installation required for the modem or the router. Only LAN drivers required for Windows. Doesn't matter if LAN is onboard or not. Only difficulty might be configuring the router.

| The router isn't the problem. My computer cannot detech the modem when it's plugged in via ethernet cable... right now I'm connecting it with a usb cable, but I need it to be ethernet so that I can connect it to my router |

| What about a USB adapter? I had to use one on my old modem. Came with a disc to load all the drivers as well. |

| what? i got it with comcast cable internet. it worked fine before i reformated |
