| Ok, the router isn't part of the problem at the moment... it's not being connected to anything. i think what the problem is is that my computer's ethernet card or whatever you plugged an ethernet cable into is not working. I go into device manager and it shows that it's not working. Any ideas how to fix that? I've tried installing drivers and such. I have mcafee firewall, although its disabled at the moment, and I have windows xp pro. |

Very good. Now we have an idea of what the actual problem might be. Is it actually not working (red "x"), or doesn't have the proper drivers (yellow "!"), or disabled?
You previously mentioned that it was an onboard NIC. Has it been disabled at all - physically (jumpers) or in the BIOS? Was it ever enabled? Check your motherboard manual for info on jumpers and BIOS settings. Sometimes you can just install the driver, other times you have to install the utilities from the motherboard installation CD. Read the motherboard manual as well as any readme.txt-type files in the LAN folder on the CD. |

1. Change the Eprom on your modem (remember to use an Eprom chip remover, a butter knife won't work)
2. Use the following init String: AT&F&C1&D0
If that doesn't work, then there is probably a line failure on your telemetrics. |

| That's just an initialization string for telephone modems. It doesn't apply to you. |

| I don't know what else you can do. I guess you can try a new PCI NIC card. Any brand name should be fine - LinkSys, D-Link, SMC, etc. It should only cost $10 - $20. |
