djs who are producers as well? or will just djs do?
PS. Robb G = underated |
Robb G is most def. underrated. The guy has cut some mean tracks in the studio, and jams harder than any dj I've seen hit the decks.
It would be nice to see more people big up the local talent we have. You don't have to find the next big thing overseas... there are plenty of local guys, doing big things. Check out Myagi, Robb G, Paranoid Jack, Luke Fair, Brad Copeland, Max Graham, etc. etc. etc.
I would love to see some more of the Toronto heads really rally behind their locals. |

The thing that always makes me wonder about the "superstar dj" label, is that is it just that, a label? Like how many times do we hear..."oh my god <insert big name dj > in owned me all night!!!"...or..."that was the best set i've ever heard...<insert big name dj > is god"
Was he/she really that good, or is it just the name that makes you say that? If I got up there and spun the exact same set would you say the same thing?....I guess what I'm trying to say is that I think us as music fans are going to have open our ears a little better in order for some of the fresh faces and sounds to evolve the scene. |
It's all business, for the mainstream DJ's. If I was a DJ and had 20 years of experience and for this already to be my exact carrer, yeah I'd love to have some kind of apprieciation, even if it's money lol
I can't really see atm nobody becoming a new icon. Too many producers focus on the same sound, which is that housey-electroish sound. It was great 2 years ago, when nobody knew of it and wasn't commercial at all. |

yo jon,
not sure if you remember but we met at the bbq (u were drunk i think)
one of my friends is itching to spin in toronto, Thomas Datt.
his first single '2v2' was featured on tiesto's In Concert dvd, and his new single 'Alone' is featured on Pvd's Politics of Dancing 2. Besides these songs he has a load of remixes and re-edits that clearly show his distinct sound/talent.
As a producer he ranks among the talented, holding his own against other established trance artists. as a dj he is starting out, having done some gigs in san francisco, and is looking for exposure right now.
i talked to Del about him, and he seemed busy. I'm sure with his talents he could do a 2 hour gig on a sat night at the Guvernment? or perhaps he could spin an hour before/after a headlining trance artist. If similarly upcoming artists like Filo+Peri and MarcelWoods can get gigs in Toronto why not Datt?? I was listeneing to some of the new stuff he's sent me and it's amazing, this guy is really up and coming.
if you want i can send you a promo set with just his productions, i have no idea where to start to get him any kind of gig in toronto?

Distinct sound? I think not. While some of his tunes are good, some of them sound like ASOT tunes.
And no one has heard him spin. |

I believe that when a "big name" is in town, people have more of a "let's paaaaaarday!" kind of attitude. Call it a "big night" attitude. Further, when someone says, "That was the best night of my life!", there are usually a variety of contributing factors. In my experience, the vibe and atmosphere is usually a stronger contributing factor for how much fun you have than music. As a result, if it is a big name is coming and people have the "big night" attitude, someone may be more likely to say it was their best night of their life because of the party atmosphere, not because of the music. |

That's where it's all wrong. It should be about the MUSIC... not the DJ. They should make it mandatory...no matter who's spinning... to turn off the lights..and let the people enjoy the music. The real fans..and true luvers of the sound. It's that idea of putting dj's up on a pedestal that's ruining the scene. I'm sorry... but u should focus less on who's spinning... and more on what's being spun. Otherwise...it'll be like looking out for the next Gretzky. There'll never be another Gretzky... but there will be another who'll change the face of the game.. in his time...in another way.
That is all.
