The thing that always makes me wonder about the "superstar dj" label, is that is it just that, a label? Like how many times do we hear..."oh my god <insert big name dj > in owned me all night!!!"...or..."that was the best set i've ever heard...<insert big name dj > is god"
Was he/she really that good, or is it just the name that makes you say that? If I got up there and spun the exact same set would you say the same thing?....I guess what I'm trying to say is that I think us as music fans are going to have open our ears a little better in order for some of the fresh faces and sounds to evolve the scene. |
couldnt have said it better myself.
A good dj is a good dj whether djmag says it or not.
and good producers arent necissarly good djs and vice versa. |

That's where it's all wrong. It should be about the MUSIC... not the DJ. They should make it mandatory...no matter who's spinning... to turn off the lights..and let the people enjoy the music. The real fans..and true luvers of the sound. It's that idea of putting dj's up on a pedestal that's ruining the scene. I'm sorry... but u should focus less on who's spinning... and more on what's being spun. Otherwise...it'll be like looking out for the next Gretzky. There'll never be another Gretzky... but there will be another who'll change the face of the game.. in his time...in another way.
That is all.

I agree 100%....I have great nights listening to some local talent that many people will never hear....and I have had terrible nights listening to Number 1 Tiesto. It is all about the music and how the music makes you feel. When you reach the level that DJs like Tiesto, Armin, PVD, Oakenfold and so on and so on get to it is about the music and not the DJ...The DJ sets the mood by choosing what to spin. If Tiesto and Armin spun the exact same set and we didn't know who spun first or second....none of us would be able to tell who was who. |

see but thats the thing, you or any other local dj cant replicate the same set from a dj like john digweed or deep dish or ritchie hawtin or danny howells or whomever who play music no one else is able to get until 6 months after they have played it (if that) ... thats part of what makes these DJS special ... you know when you are going to see the big boys you are going to hear music you wont hear djs in your local clubs rocking until months after the fact if that ... |

:wtf: Ok!
But I still say... that if "U" in particular... spun an identical set.. transitions and all... to that of let's say.. Eric Prydz... and the lights were turned off ..anyone who would be there.. dancing...partying it up.. wouldn't/couldn't tell the dif.. and would strictly be there for the MUSIC..SCENE....VIBE.. and not the DJ. Who too many times.. do NOT deserve the hype that they end up getting.
That's what this T.O. EDM scene has lost... and by the looks of things... doesn't seem to be getting back any time soon. |

take a chill pill, easy with the hostility, it's his own opinion, respect or you shall receive none |

I really wish it suddenly became difficult for any joe/jane-shmoe to get new records.... or at least put that whole scene way back underground from the public eye.
If that would happen and the real DJs would strive for always a new or unfound record, thenthe novelty of hearing a particular DJ would return.
It's true because, as long as the guy next to me, my brother, and my friends can all download or acquire the same tracks I do, then nobody has any kind of unique music collection to mix for the masses to hear for the FIRST TIME.
The fact that so many of us can re-write on these forums, the tracklisting that Armin played last time at the KH, then there's nothing left to be in awe of, and nothing left to be inquiring about, and thus needing to see that DJ again because you liked thier particular style of gems rather than all the gems every1 already has heard before.
This is the idea that I'm trying to abide by, while still grabbing tracks I simply love already.
In essence then, I guess I blame the internet file sharing boom. |

The dance scene doesnt need new djs. It needs new fans. It needs people to be as open as they were when this whole thing first started out 20 years ago and even 10 years ago.
It needs people who dont bitch about people using cell phones or whistles at clubs. It needs people who go to clubs for the vibe and the music, not the drugs, the posing, or to bow down to some dj on a pedestel as if he were some rock star.
Until this happens again, we will keep having this discussion. |
