i love all ages events

why? because those 15 year olds become 19 year olds who dont listen to hip hop.

Back in the day, most events with big djs were all ages. And they literally were ALL ages from 15-40

If that would happen and the real DJs would strive for always a new or unfound record, thenthe novelty of hearing a particular DJ would return.
It's true because, as long as the guy next to me, my brother, and my friends can all download or acquire the same tracks I do, then nobody has any kind of unique music collection to mix for the masses to hear for the FIRST TIME.

The fact that so many of us can re-write on these forums, the tracklisting that Armin played last time at the KH, then there's nothing left to be in awe of, and nothing left to be inquiring about, and thus needing to see that DJ again because you liked thier particular style of gems rather than all the gems every1 already has heard before.

This is the idea that I'm trying to abide by, while still grabbing tracks I simply love already.

In essence then, I guess I blame the internet file sharing boom.

music should be for everyone, not for a particular group/clique, as trainspotting, who cares as long as the music is great and played with heart, that's what makes it special in my opinion. As for playing unkown tracks, well it's nice but only if the music is actually good, there is always a line where djs play tracks only because they're unkown but not good either.

but who says you can't have the underground in all this aswell

as Jayx1 mentioned, we don't need superstar djs, we need fans :)

I don't know how you guys can say that the scene is now more about the DJ than it is about the music when every review thread is overflowing with people sharing their thoughts on the music they heard during the night, only mentioning the DJ who spun the tracks. Yes there's the occasional 'my loins lust for Armin' post, but those are a small minority.

With regards to the whole unknown tracks thing:
The DJ's responsibility is to keep the crowd happy, which most often happens by dropping the tracks they love. There's really not that many unknown good tracks - not enough to consistently fill your sets with at least. So as a DJ, you have a choice of playing a set filled with unknown tracks that even you will admit are uninspired, or playing a set consisting mostly of tracks that you know people like, putting in an unknown here and there (which is what ends up happening anyway - just because they were IDed doesn't make them known)

As far as people going to see big names:
Well, it's only natural that people go to see the DJs that they know can deliver a rocking set (see my paragraph above). BUT, that doesn't mean you can't book local talent alongside the big names to let the local DJs prove themselves. I'll admit, I decide to go to the club because of the big name, but I keep my mind open to everybody that's spinning (I actually wish they wouldn't book so many big names in one night - first, I not only end up missing out on a big name DJ that i would have wanted to see because of set conflicts, but I also miss out on the local talent because I'm hopping from room to room trying to grab at least a portion of the big name DJ's set. Optimally, you should have 1, max 2 big names per night, with the rest being locals). Furthermore, as hard as it may be to admit, the local DJs can't survive without the big names to bring in the crowd that will hear the locals perform.

So in the end, I think it all boils down to the fact that there's no problem with the current DJs or the current crowd, but rather, as other people said, we just aren't getting enough new people interested in the music. People experiment with music when they're young. By the time they're 19, they've already made up their mind on what they like/don't and it's a bit too late to convert them then.

good post.

what do people think about Jon-o-bir?
mindspin
its music, and music is supposed to be performed, not just played. take any other genre of music other than edm....if you want to see the creators of the music perform, you have to go to a concert and see them physically play the tunes on their instruments. to truely get a feel for the music, you have to see the artist perform it in the way THEY intend for us to hear it.....not just the finished studio product that has the producers stamp of approval. music is an expression of emotion, energy, and talent. all of which come from the hearts and minds of certain individuals. when you see a band play live you can see all of this coming out through the artists and it allows for much more of a connection to be made with the music and the creators of the music. you can really see what the ppl were feeling when they wrote the song. however, edm is slightly differnt. you do not directly get to see the artists peforming their songs live, but you get to watch a dj who spins songs that conform to his musical tastes. djs play songs which they connect to and which strike a certain emotional chord for them. watching a dj like tiesto react to the vibe of the crowd when he watches them go nuts to traffic is much more fulfilling than hearing mark oliver drop it at 5am some random sunday morning. it feels a little different to watch deep dish drop flashdance and see them jump up and down ectatically because the crowd is loving their music. if the dj himself doesn't really matter and you guys want the lights off and just to listen to only the music why do you even come out? by a kick ass stereo and sit at home and just enjoy a very well constructed set.......but in a club, with identical djs.....spinning the exact same set......what is going to be more entertaining to watch.....a random dj with great skills playing good tunes.....or the superstar dj who is going crazy watching the crowd love every minute of his set? the guy who can see his music being enjoyed by thousands? superstar djs aren't just superstar dj's because they can throw together a good set.....there is more to it than that...

Something I've been thinking about for quite some time now. I think a new prodigy superstar DJ would shake things up again, re-invigorate things. Someone to really push and ride this new wave of dance music.

The last time I got really excited about hyping up a rookie, was when JZ came to town. Sasha mentor, etc.

In the meantime, the veterans are holding it down quite nicely, and very few have fallen off their pedestal. (Picotto comes to mind) The trance superstars have possibly wavered, in my opinion only because the production hasn't been there to back them up. Playing a setlist with 4 year old tracks doesn't really excite me.

I think a lot of the Nubreed dj's of the past (Lawler/ Howells/ Sander) have now firmly found their place in dance music history and I think their careers will only continue to gain momentum.

SUPERSTARS? Where are you?

-Fanciulli
-Angello
-Prydz
-JLC
-even Luke Fair could be a contender!

Comments? Anyone?

Comments?

People in this city would just rip into said DJ and his ability or lack thereof.

People in this city don't know how to show love, but they can complain with the best of them.

Edit: Back at Harris Institute, we had a class on hip hop, and hip hop culture, which was taught by Canaidan rapper: Thrust. He also stated that Toronto is the worst city to play in, because people will pay $50 to go to a show, and they'll boo you right off the stage.

I can't say I disagree....Especially with the electronic music scene. People can't seem to identify good musicians aside from their own personal tastes.

see but thats the thing, you or any other local dj cant replicate the same set from a dj like john digweed or deep dish or ritchie hawtin or danny howells or whomever who play music no one else is able to get until 6 months after they have played it (if that) ... thats part of what makes these DJS special ... you know when you are going to see the big boys you are going to hear music you wont hear djs in your local clubs rocking until months after the fact if that ...

i totally see your point, and couldn't agree more. All I'm saying is lets say i recorded a set a big name dj spun that totally destroyed a party....wheeled into the guv, threw it on, hyped the crowd all night...would it get the same reaction with a no name behind the decks?

Billche
My vote goes to Preach. Anyone who has seen him spin at Aria in montreal can vouch that the man has a lot of talent. Plus, now that he is touring europe and the rest of the world, and producing tracks with big names like Marco V, he is gaining recognition by leaps and bounds.

He is definately up there as one of my favourite Canadian DJ's.

well u wouldnt really have much of a turnout other than for the regulars who go there regardless of who spins

most of the EDM partiers these days care about that name to make their party...

i personally go only if its a big name cos then i see more people and usually as mentioned before, i hear tracks i may only hear once that are insane.
