Another year and yup I'm fasting again....missing out on a ton of parties too :(
I not only fast but stop clubbing, drinking...anything fun basically....I'll never give up listening to tunes tho...(technically music is haram too I hear)...I'd sooner starve than not be able to listen to music :) |

Muslim draws closer to their Lord by abandoning the things they enjoy, such as food and drink. |
This doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Food and drink is not simply for enjoyment, it is to help you survive and be an operative member of society.
People cannot function properly if they are malnourished and dehydrated. Why would your god want that from you? Doesn't he want you to be well, healthy and happy?
I mean no disrespect in any way to those of you who are followers of the Muslim faith. I just don't quite understand the whole premise behind the idea that not eating can bring a person closer to god.
I totally understand the abstaining from selfish enjoyments or "naughty" things like sex, smoking, swearing etc.
But eating? It is a really unhealthy practice. |

Not really. Fasting is known to have several medical benefits. It is advocated by almost all the religions in one form or the other. In Hinduism for example, people fast on a particular day every week and on several religious days throughout the year. You give fasting a religious flavor and a lot more people will practice it with zeal. You tell them it's good for their health, and they won't. :) |

regardless, what good is religion when it separates people? muslim, jew, christian, hindu- blood is still red |
religions don't separate people. Misinterpretation of the religions texts and attempts at converting people is the main reason for this type of separation. As I see it, knowledge is universal. People living in different parts of the world understood the same fundamental concepts and interpreted them in ways that were relevant to them in their social and geographical environment. You take these interpretations and preach them to people of a completely different region with no cultural similarity what so ever. What happens ? Blind beliefs take hold. The true relevance is lost, and then religious leaders themselves don't get it anymore. They start using religion for political purposes and the end result is a separation of people. |

Wow...love how you guys find the old threads. It's getting harder and harder every year...today we get to eat at 8PM-ish.
Sooooooooooo hungry. Fahad, what's for iftaar? :)
Happy ramadan to all of you and to the non-muslims just wanted to extend my thanks for respecting our religion and helping us obey God. Honestly, it's good to see how many people are fascinated and help keep us motivated. |
