Monitoring headphones

I am just about to purchase a set of studio headphones and was wondering which ones to go for. I am split between the Sony MDR-7506's and the Sennheiser HD280's.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

I use AKG, but if your mind is made up on using one of those two then go with the sony. Sennheiser headphones are great but that particular model isn't very good for production (there's a reason it sells for the price it's listed at).

Anyway, I'm sure this thread is going to end up in another flame war, so I'm sorry to say that you're wasting your time by asking. Go do some proper research - read reviews and LISTEN to the headphones at a store before making any purchases.

heh, "studio" headphones.

Stay away from the Sony's though.. the bass is especially incorrect.

I've owned both of these headphones and I would say the sennheiser HD280's are much better than sony's.

The sony's have a bassier sound which is great for DJing but it tends to make your mixes weak in the low-end. The sennheiser are a bit weaker in the bass, but after breaking in the headphones (play music in it for 24 hours straight) and being used to the sound of it, it can be quite decent for producing.

Then again, there are better headphones, with of course a heftier price tag.

u r flamed.

If u do a quick search you'll find that 280's are highly regarded on this forum. The Sony's are good, but not for production, theyre aimed more towards the DJ side of things - ive heard the bass isnt very accurate/desirable?

I´m more than happy with my Behringer HPX2000 headphones and they cost about $20.

Just bought the SENNS you've listed....I love em. I was gonna buy the Sony's but the salesman talked me into the HD280's...glad he did. They're much more comfy after 3 hours and the overall flat sound is perfect for mixing.

So are sidechained basslines - what's your point?

The Sonys are more honest than the Sennheiser HD280s. Neither are particularly great, though. Only the AKG studio monitors and the Sennheiser HD600 or higher (or the discontinued 580's) actually have a flat frequency response.

HD280s are built for noise reduction, warmth, etc. And for low cost. They really don't help you to hear the *problems* with a production - they're designed more to make any source material sound good, which I'm sure is why producers love them so much (it makes the tracks sound better than they really are). Sony's may exaggerate the low end a little bit, but that's usually not where the problems are - the problems are in the high end, which the HD280s are really terrible at reproducing because of the "noise reduction".

lol!
Stay away from Sony defently...same for Senneiser...only 590 and up are good for production...
The funny thing is people look on the box and see the word "Studio" on it and start thinking that the headphones are monitored...lots of ppl in Israel think that HD25 are monitor headphones..the thing is that most if not all monitored headphones for production are semi-sealed and not fully cause of the damage you can cause and more.
If I were u I'd go for the AKG-240S....what I got....great headphones! and I found out that lots of ppl work with them.

yeah, those headphones are the bizness.

I own a pair of Beyerdynamic DT250's, and I highly recommend them. You'll need to buy a 1/4" to 1/8" plug converter from radioshack for like, 2 dollars.
